My 5 year old grandson

My watch passion began when my grandmother bought me a "divers" watch when I was 5 years old. It obviously wasn't expensive, but to me it was my everything. I remember wearing that watch in the bathtub and in the pool with my mask and snorkel. That has morphed into like the rest of us a passion that has lasted 53 years. My grandson is turning 5 this month and I want to continue that family tradition. I've been searching the internet for the last week for that right piece and can't find it. Please give me some suggestions. Let's say under $250.

This is one option I was thinking of.

Look at Marathon field watches, too. I think there are a couple that are ~34mm, and they have cool, toolish character.

Alternatively, there are tons of vintage men's watches out in the world with case diameter ~32mm - 34mm, and $250 will buy a pretty good one. It won't have a rotating bezel, and you'll probably have to have it cleaned and oiled at least once (maybe at purchase, and maybe once more before he outgrows it), but he'll get to wind it each morning

I would look for an old Hamilton field/military style watch or something similar, because these will have good enough water resistance to withstand the occasional dousing.

Both of my daughters started at about that age with watches and we went with Casio Baby-G Shocks. A lot of colors available and the watch is tough as nails. Pool, ocean, rough play, it has it all covered. The older one, 18, still wears a G-Shock on occasion but lives in her Apple Watch. The younger one, 13, has a dozen G-Shocks she has collected over the years and has a Shinola that is the pride of her collection. Go for it and I have enjoyed the watch game with my children.

I like the Seiko SKX 013 idea. Rather get the kid used to telling time instead of looking at a digital. I understand that a lot of kids cannot tell time on an analog clock or watch. Also show him how to use the timing bezel. Retro!

I think that it is a bit big for that age, but Casio Duro swapping the strap for a NATO is a good option.

This is what I was thinking as well. Yes, it will be large on him but he'll love it and can grow into it.

I think for a child just turning five, this would be a more appropriate choice. It's what I bought my 5 year old nephew. He loves his, and picked up telling time quicker than I thought he would. I think it's great grandpa is teaching his grandson the joy of watches. Post some pics when it happens.

OP I would also consider getting a perlon strap, because it'll be far easier to fit it on a smaller wrist, if need be (not to mention all the micro-adjustability). Congrats to your grandson (and to you)!

Another vote for the baby G. I bought my daughter a white one when she was 11, and she still wears it (14 now).
