Playa del Carmen
Will be there in a few weeks.
I assume same scarcity of Rolex there as everywhere else? Can’t beleive I have bought three watches in the past six months and drooling wondering what else I can find in a few weeks. Saved a bunch doing my own new kitchen at contractor cost and no labor and wife says I deserve to pay myself. Did not argue with her. ![]() I have read of the tax savings or VAT refund that makes buying there a good deal. What a terrible illness. Any insight will be greatly appreciated |

Sadly seems like the case — we travel quite a bit - and I usually always go to an AD (various manufacturers) or two...nada. Sad.

The places to find rare watches aren't where lots of wealthy people are passing through with high turn-over. Desirable pieces will be bought instantly, if they were ever out for general purchase in the first place.
If you want to find sought-after watches, go to places with fewer wealthy customers and a more stable population. Don't go to London, go up north. Don't go to New York, go (as FlyFishingLawyer suggests) to the Midwest. |

Just happened to stop in Ultrajewelers yesterday, was given the usual nothing is available and when sought after pieces are received they go to customers with a current purchase history with them. Not much available in the cases, they did have a blinged out yellow gold day date with the rainbow bezel.

I travel to Cancun frequently. My experience says that Rolex in Mexico are about as expensive as they get. With the added hassle of the tax free paperwork you have to go through and the fact you won’t get back to the AD once your home should you have a problem, then I’d say forget it.

I was in playa in mid-Feb and bought a Breitling Seawolf Avenger II that just called my name in Ultrajewels from Mariana, who was a pleasure to deal with...
In the rolex case, they had the usual case dwellers, but nothing in the sport family... If you do get lucky and find something in stock, the VAT refund works well, but remember: you MUST have them fill the paperwork and file it from within the store or a) it's a pain in the ass from the airport when trying to catch a flight and b) they do it right and give you a person /necktie to yank when /if you have a problem. Remember, it is Mexico and the process for the VAT recovery isn't exactly a well oiled machine in function there - read the internet as there are plenty of people waiting upwards of a year, or never seeing their refund at all. I had the in-house VAT rep file all of my paperwork and I just got a few hundred dollars submitted as a 3rd party payment (not a refund) to my Amex last week from a purchase made on February 21st. Good luck and feel free to ping me for any questions. Have a great trip by the way - fun town! |
