Resale
Well I decided to shop my SBGR053 around just out of curiosity. You know what I mean, was just thinking of shuffling some pieces around. Anyways I was shocked at the resale of Grand Seiko
Yikes! I mean part of it is that it’s an entry level model, no doubt but I think part of it must still be the stigma of Seiko on the dial for some folks. What do you guys think? Anyone run into this? Moral of the story is that it is an absolute beauty of a watch that I’ll be happy to keep. |

I don’t think about resale if I buy
But I do resell and trade. If I like a watch I buy it. If I get hosed a bit on resale, so be it. I do better in stocks than watches.

For new GS it really depends what discount you originally buy at, who you sell to (dealer or private) and the model you are selling. Buy right and sell right and you shouldn't lose much.

Assuming a buy at MSRP, what depreciation are you finding?

Each brand is different and there is some variation with Grand Seiko. In watching the market you can go 30-60% off retail on a pre-owned Grand Seiko. On LE or Special Editions you can get close to retail or more. What you buy a watch for has a lot to do with your ability to get some or most of your money back out. It is true with most of the brands. If you want out of your current watch shop it and find the best deal possible. It is only money and you can move on.

Grand seiko definitely on the lower range of resale. Regret selling my sbgx117, should've just kept it for the price I let it go for.

I lost quite a bit too on one of their limited’s last summer, but I only traded it for a 16710 so I bit the bullet & never looked back.

I do see a BNIB SBGR253 going for 20% off retail on Chrono24. So if you paid retail and now it is slightly used I expect another 20% loss would be expected. Beautiful watch by the way. I got my SBGN005 for about 15% off retail from a TS BNIB. So that seems to track.
How much selling a watch costs you depends greatly on what you pay. MSRP plus 8-9% state sales tax or even more with VAT if that effects you can be a costly trade in. However buying at a discount from a seller in another state to avoid US state sales tax or somehow buying exVAT also at a discount and you will be in a much better position if you decide to trade or sell. You are also fighting the 053 to 253 change, which may matter to some folks although there was no real change in the watch just the branding on the dial. If I am buying from a local AD at no discount and subject to our near 9% sales tax, I pretty much better decide I am going to keep the watch forever or at least pass it to a family member. |

I love the GS's. Great looking watches going all the way back to the 60's. I'd be curious to know Spring Drive resale vs Auto. Looks like I just gave myself some light reading for tonight!
