I haven't been to the Napa tasting room yet but the one in Sonoma (Alexander Valley) is stunning.

I thought the wine was phenomenal and I would definitely go back and visit.

I was debating Napa vs Sonoma since I will already be at Jordan one day but I am going to the Napa tasting room. Just doing a quick walk in tasting.

Your pictures look incredible! Hopefully the Napa room is half as nice.

I’ve only had Silver Oak a couple times and have really enjoyed it. Hopefully that was just a bad experience for me. Irregardless, I’m looking forward to going there. This will be my first Napa trip and I’m so excited

If this is your first trip, it 100% needs to be Napa. Silver Oak is nice, you should try to stop by Opus One too.

Not quite as good as the ‘05 Martha’s Vineyard, but after 60 min in the decanter, it opened up and was really good. It went well with the ribeye. Just looked in my wine fridge and only 2 bottles left.

Hope your having a good weekend, my friend!

I’ve had some issues in the past with Heitz - and how it has cellared — but 87 — MAN such a great vintage. I have a cpl 87 Montelenas left in the cellar I’ve been holding on to. Opened one 750 and one Magnum. Unreal.

Cheers my friend!!

Now I’m thirsty. I haven’t had the 2014 yet, still have some older ones I’ve been drinking. Good luck with the renovations, I hope they go as smooth as possible.

It’s a solid go-to for me. And Silver Oak just never disappoints.

I had the 85 Heitz Martha’s Vineyard, 2 bottles actually, both very consistent. Different now that Joel is no longer with us. Legendary.

I do remember we discussed - I think the ‘peaks’ are perhaps just slightly different than the masses - and in the general sense I slightly overshot them a bit....

I just have to gloat a little. I entered my 2016 Petite Sirah in 4 competitions this year and the results from the first competition just came in.

~*GOLD*~

and 3rd overall in the entire competition across all divisions. Hopefully this is the start of a trend. Wish me luck on the next 3 competitions! The next competition is being judged next Saturday.

I figured I'd ask this question here & supplement my Google'ing: I'm in the market for a CA white wine (I am not well-versed in wine) from '88 as a birthday present. Can anyone throw out some bottles & where to get them? I'll be in San Diego soon in ~2mo & can ride ~200mi for the right bottle.

That will be a challenge unless you are looking for a dessert wine. Dessert wines tend to be able to last pretty long. Constructing a white wine that can last 30+ years (any wine for that matter) is not easy so I would look at the areas that have been doing this for a long time. California doesn’t really have the reputation of producing a lot of white wine from the 80’s that is reliably good today for what you will likely pay. You are probably better off looking at France because you will spend a lot of money for something like this and so you would obviously like it to be good. Would be a better bet to go for port, dessert wines or reds.

Thank you for the insight! Are there any American vintage wines to look at/for?

Is it that white wine doesn't last as well as reds do?

In France you could find whites that will last 50+ years but it is an art to make any wine that can last this long. Whites are just tougher. If you’re just buying the bottle as a keep sake with the date then the pool of possibilities is wide open. But if you are going to serve it just realize that a wine on its 30th birthday is very different to its 5th or 10th birthday. Most of the fruit is gone and you are left with notes of leather, wood and cigar tobacco like flavours. Great if that’s what you like. A port from ‘88 would be a little easier to source and the right one would be outstanding, as would be a dessert wine from Sauternes and Barsac.

Thanks! I'd like a bottle to serve, drink & enjoy from '88, but after what you've said, it might taste too old. I'll look for a more recent bottle.

A lot of what Bosbevok said rings true but as always there are exceptions. Stylistically mass produced CA chards from the big producers for affordability aren't going to be worth seeking out but the older masters of wine making in CA are.

If you can find Monte Bello chard, Mayacamus chard, Kistler chard even Grigich Hills just to name a few are all capable of aging 30 years or more depending on the vintage. I don't know what was up in 1988 but if it was a strong year then I wouldn't give up hope on a good CA bottle, but Burgundy is your best bet IMHO
