Will the Yachtmaster 40mm be replaced?

I know we can’t know what Rolex will do, but I’m curious what you think. With the entrance of the 42mm white gold model released at Basel, does the group think we’ll see the 40mm sized up to 42mm? If not, perhaps three sizes will be offered? Your thoughts please.

I very much hope not. I won’t be buying a YM anytime soon anyway but if 40s were discontinued in favour of 42s in general that would be very bad news indeed.

Sure, make bigger variants for guys with big wrists or the ‘bigger is better’ crowd. But 40 will always the sweet spot. If 40s were pulled then I’d be sticking to pre-owned only.

I wouldn't mind an increase to 42mm for the SS YM. In fact I've always found my 116622 to be on the small side, or right at the limit for a sports watch.

A 40mm case is not so much the"problem", a 28mm dial is. You see bigger dials in 38mm dress watches.

Now that Rolex has stopped investing in the frumpy, tired, slab-sided sub pieces and is moving up market there's really no reason to discontinue the YM40.

I think it would be odd to have only one Yachtmaster reference in 42mm. Maybe a 42mm option for the rose gold model. Maybe maintain the 37 and 40mm for the metallic bezel models.

Variants will continue, I can't see Rolex making the YM a 42mm case only, option.

They just put the new movement in all 40mm Yacht-Masters. I think they are here to stay! If anything the line will expand.

I had considered this the other day and it would not surprise me that the 42mm is the new YM. It could become the first stainless steel model offered on oysterflex and would prove quite popular I believe.

The Yacht-Master 42 is absolutely gorgeous in person. My AD got one in and I had the chance to check it out. If it wasn't PM, I would be all over the YM42.

With that being said, Rolex doesn't release SS models with rubber straps and likely never will. If a SS version of the YM42 is ever offered, those that bought the PM version will get first option.

My AD's list is already 30 buyers long for the PM YM42. It's an amazing watch.

I'm not a fan of the YM on steel bracelet or the YMII. But the YM42 is truly awesome.

Even though there is still availability at AD's - this model is selling fast even if it's a 'last resort' for in-store buyers due to it being only thing available.

YM is one of Rolex's top 3 best models ever produced IMO

Exactly- it would be very unusual to discontinue a line they just updated and assigned new references.

It just was -- as noted, new movements and apparently minor changes to the case (and a better clasp as well).

If Rolex wants something to compete with AP ROO, I can see eventually all YM going to 42mm with oyster flex.

I didn’t realize there was a clasp update on the 40. What is the improvement? I knew about the addition of the glidelock on the 42. (It’d be awesome if the glidelock made its way to the entire yachtmaster line)
