A good buddy of mine got me into Scotch a while back. We play poker with a bunch of guys at his house and the first time I went into his basement I was in awe! He has 62 full bottles of VERY nice Scotch on his custom made shelf. That's not including what is on or in the bar area as well. I also told him that most people don't buy Scotch by the case (24 bottles of Macallan No. 4 on his bar the last time we were there.
That being said, I have been able to try a bunch of different Scotch's over the years to understand what I like and what I don't. Unfortunately, the peaty stuff doesn't agree with me at all. Instant heartburn! I definitely prefer the sweeter, smoother single malt. I'm really getting a taste for this. I'd much rather sip Scotch for the six or seven hours we're playing poker rather the drinking a bunch of beers. In my liquor cabinet at home, right now I have the following choices: Macallen 18 Glenlivet 21 Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask Balvenie 17 Doublewood Balvenie 21 Portwood Glenfiddich Winter Storm |

Normally I’d say pour a little out for the homies we lost, but that’s unfortunately already been done by many magnitudes........

On the flip side, I bet we can expect a limited release "Lightning Fire Barrel" from Beam/Knob Creek/Bookers/Basil Hayden in the next few years! There has to be at least 2 or 3 barrels that survived the fire! |

I've been holding off on opening the SFTB until I get the call I've been waiting for from my AD... but it's starting to gather dust!

How's the 13 Year Old Fitz? Have you been able to sample the 11 Year to compare it? I can't seem to find a bottle in my area. I'm also not willing to pay the exorbitant secondary asking prices for the 13.
I picked up the 11 Year on secondary and luckily paid a lot less than the going rate is right now, but still overpaid. |

I just won an online auction for a bottle of SFTB with a date very close to my kiddos birth date. I'm planning on keeping it for another 19 years before opening it and celebrating with him. Hopefully you get to open yours before that!

I like that plan! I was able to get both the Blanton's Gold & the SFTB at retail by working with a store in Amsterdam called "Sterk Amsterdam" over email a couple of weeks before my visit -- it was surprisingly easy to bring them home. It was at the end of an EU trip and I was flying nonstop back from AMS anyway, so I just put them in the checked luggage, no problem at all when landing in Seattle. They even let me pick the letters in advance since they knew the date I'd be stopping by the store. As for the green bottle, I was able to find that in Montreal.

13 > 9 > 11 13 is the best of the bunch IMO. The complexity does it for this Batch. The 9 was sweet and hot. The 11 I found bland and average. Picked this one up on the Liquor Store Site for $129.95. Got lucky. |
