One could argue that the Explorer II has always been a rebadged and rebezeled GMT Master, as they have shared they same movements.

But there is something refreshing about the Explorer II steel bezel because it doesn't scream "I've got a Rolex look at me!" like the ubiquitous Subs and GMT Masters do.

Sometimes, low profile is good. I wonder how bad Rolex will screw up the Explorer II when they eventually redesign it and bling it up. If polished center links enter the equation, count me out.

Those old 1655s are stunning. Too bad Rolex will never resurrect/reissue the "classic look."

Favorite Rolex I ever owned. Unfortunately just too small for my wrist. Wish Rolex would come out with a 43 or 44mm version!

I think it would be too big for the purist/core Explorer II lovers who appreciate it because it is a bit smaller and thinner than a GMT and/or Submariner, by way of comparison.

Yesterday, I banged it pretty hard on the door near bezel and crystal. I thought I was doomed for sure but when I checked to see if there were any damages, there were none! I'm sure if it was a Submariner or GMT II, there would have been some sort of nick made in the bezel. I love how the bezel on the Explorer II is fixed. It's rugged baby!

I didn't know this watch existed when I got my GMT Master II in 1986, otherwise, I would have gotten an Explorer II.

No moving bezel to break or wear out, and from what I hear, the Explorer II fits under shirt and coat cuffs much better than does the rotating bezel GMT Master II.

Plus I get tired of seeing my watch on other people's wrists; and I don't like having fad or popular possessions.

That said, I saw a GMT Master (not a II) on a wrist the other day, and I complimented the owner on have a vintage Rolex that looked brand new; and, surprisingly, he identified my "Fat Lady" as the transition watch which immediately followed his, and he did so from across the table.

How did he do that?

Anyway, the Explorer II club has a more exclusive membership.
