Suggestions for a visit to the Hamptons etc...

Hi guys,

We are thinking of flying up to see the Hamptons, Martha's vineyard and Nantucket etc in late september after Florida... Would probably stop by Boston too.

Any good suggestions and tips on what to do and where to stay?

Thinking we might need an extra week for this.

Consider deep sea fishing from Montauk, the fishing capital of the world. Do a half day on a party boat.
Hampton’s have great beaches.
Great restaurants, but pricey.
Drop in and see Martha on Georgia Pond, “it’s a good thing “.

I’m also considering a trip to Montauk so I appreciated the suggestion.
I looked up Gurney’s on Yelp and the reviews are all over the place. Some of them were actually disturbing as they involved theft and at least one assault.
I think I’ll keep looking.
-this is not a reflection on the suggestion. Some reviews were very positive. I just wouldn’t take that chance on this place.

I would really recommend visiting Montauk during the week, it's packed on weekends in the summer. Especially as a foreigner who doesn't know the usual weekend crowd, there's no benefit to being there on the weekend

As much as I enjoyed my trip to the Hampton’s I can’t imagine ever going back unless I was living in NYC. We rented a house in east hampton for a few weeks one summer and had a good time.

It’s just there’s other beaches that don’t involve the miserable traffic jam driving in from manhattan. Driving to montauk was probably the highlight.

We have a house out here: coming in September is great as the summer masses are gone, the weekends are generally still busy and the water usually still warm. If a storm hits then the water temp drops and I don’t go into the ocean, maybe the bay for swimming and paddle boarding. Having a car is essential As for Hotels, the Topping Rose House or The Maidstone could be a consideration. Definitely stop in Sag Harbor, The American Hotel for food, people and drinks is hard to beat, paddle board diva runs a nice activity spectrum on the water, Main Beach has board and kayak rentals. Hike the Wandering Dune in Napeague, Duryeas for lunch, Montauket for local watering hotel. As fishing, some people cast right of the beach, September has Striped bass, and hiring a boat of Montauk is a great Half day with usually a nice yield. I think a trip to the lighthouse should be on the list, spend a little time checking out the surfers north or south from there, maybe even bring a pick nick.
Citerella has a good choice of to go foods. Btw, there’s no public drinking, even on the beaches, but we a rose ;-))) otherwise, visit East andSouthampton, along with Bridgehampton, some have even Rolexes. In SH you’ll find aventura motors if you’re looking for fun cars. And for rain days, there’s a children’s museum, the Parrish art museum, the Whaling museum. And if you’re here on a Friday, stop by Wölffers wine shop for sundowners and ussualy some music. Nice crowd and brilliant setting. Have fun, came early...

Fishing in Montauk is a must. Also, the bars are really fun and there's even a brewery

Do you think it’s a bad place to go with a 14-month old?

Fishing/bar diving etc will be quite limited.

Little out of left field but probably the same drive time would be Cape May in NJ. Stay at Congress Hall. We and my kids love it.

So much this! Hamptons beaches aren't great, it's just that it's relatively close to NYC. I've never driven out to Montauk, only flown in, but imagine it could be unbearable, even though it's a great place to visit. Hope the OP spends more time in the Vineyard.

As someone who grew up in NY and frequently went to Montauk and the Hamptons as a kid...I agree with you. I much prefer Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Chatham is also a great option on the lower Cape. Newport is also good for touristy stuff, especially if you are into museums and history.

Also, as others have said, the traffic situation driving to Montauk on a weekend or around a holiday is a nightmare.

Love the hamptons in the summer but it’s best to get there via helicopter due to traffic lol spent this past weekend grilling, chilling and jetskiing. Check out east Hampton village. Also Rumba is a good time, then take their water shuttle to cow fish for drinks.

Looks like we may be booking a week at an Airbnb in Southampton for early September. If we go through with it we’ll be bringing my daughter who will be about 21 months.
I’ll try and remember to report back. Also have a couple friends with a kids around my daughters age. Will ask them what they do there

Long Island traffic is the worst, but September is good time to go. No real suggestions outside what others have said so far. Montauk is now velvet ropes and bottle service for supremely obnoxious people. Bummer.

I've done similar with great results. Especially with a big party its especially convenient to just rent a big place and go to costco for essentials. otherwise we just order in and relax on the beach

I've been visiting the Hamptons since 1995. Very close friends of my family own a home a block off the beach in Southampton off of Wickapogue Road if anyone is familiar. 8 beds 11.5 baths 8,000 sqft. It sits on part of the 300 acre Murray-McDonnell compound that was subdivided decades ago.

They have private access to the beach so the the entire beach is almost always empty even on Fourth of July. It's phenomenal. I'll wake up, walk down the block on to the beach and fish for the entire day setting up a few surf poles and jig for fluke. So I don't have to worry about traffic or anything going to the beach. It's a large home with a chef, maids, pool, open bar, screening room, English Gardens, designed for entertaining, etc... so I basically stay confined to the grounds as it's like a resort with everything provided. We'll step out a couple times for dinner though.

As far as traffic, you have to travel there and back on off hours and days. Sometimes I'll travel on the actual 4th of July in the morning and always come home in the afternoon the day after the major traffic day. I just take different days off of work. Sometimes I'll leave at 10:00pm on a major travel day and not get traffic except being stuck behind the slow pokes on Route 27 hogging both lanes. My folks are retired and travel out there Thursday early afternoons and come home Monday afternoons. So traffic is nowhere near as peak times. My parent's friend takes a helicopter from NYC That would be sweet!

I venture to Sag Harbor to visit my buddy who has a boat. He's an avid sailor along with another friend and they sail to Martha's Vinyard together. I prefer just to visit the boat and drink

I took my girlfriend's son the the Long Island Aquarium which was a lot of fun for him. But when I'm in the Hamptons I don't do a lot of sight seeing.

My boss owns 14 acres of waterfront property on Martha's Vinyard with like 350 feet of private beach. I'll leave my car at the ferry and go over and get picked up. Amazing fishing. I roll out of bed at the crack of dawn and walk down the path in his backyard onto the beach. People rent his place for $10k a week and I get to stay for free. He stocks the freezer with steaks for me too.

Lots of fun times and good memories at these places. Definitely worth a visit. Especially if you like seafood. I like catching my own!

Hi Andreas,
It’s not clear if you settled on what to do. If you still need ideas on Martha’s Vineyard let me know. I go over there a lot for day trips and it’s a lot of fun. I used to stay for weekends a lot but I now live on Cape Cod and don’t need to stay over.

If my daughter was as young as your child I might do something like this if it’s just a few days:

I’d stay in Falmouth at the Seacrest Hotel. It’s on Old Silver Beach and it’s great for little ones. Nice and flat, no big drop off in the water, and the waves are small. It’s has some great restaurants in the center of town. The restaurant is okay and sunsets are phenomenal.

I’d do a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard taking the Island Queen ferry, it’s smaller and more enjoyable than the Woods Hole one. You can rent bikes or a car for the day.

A car I would do the whole island. Breakfast or lunch at the Blackdog Tavern in Vineyard Haven and some walking around town. Then off to the Gay Head Lighthouse for a touristy view. Then over to South Beach for a dip or stroll or to just check out the beach. Then over to Edgartown for a stroll around town. Seafood Shanty has a nice deck overlooking the harbor and good food. Maybe the small ferry over to Chappaquiddick for some nostalgia while you’re there, but without four wheel drive I’d skip it. Not much to see on a quick trip. Although you could spend a full day out there on the beach, it’s beautiful but rough. Then back to Oak Bluffs. Nancy’s is pretty good to get a drink or snack before the ferry back. When you get back to Falmouth dinner at the Flying Bridge is pretty good and overlooks Falmouth Harbor.

The Hamptons does sound a lot nicer, I just try to keep things simple and enjoyable for some nice quality family time.

In fact, when my daughter was 8 months old we bought a camper, tow behind travel trailer. We did that almost every weekend of every summer for about 17-18 years. Ah, memory lane...it makes me drift off topic.

Have fun my friend. Kevin.
