the OP article doesn't surprise me a bit. Rolex and others could do far better. And let's not even talk used and vintage. That's a whole other mess of opportunists feathering their nests.

Great read. Like all asset bubbles, the promise of quick and easy money tends to quickly attract the unsavory aspects of society.
Personally, I don't feel like increasing production is the right long-term solution. For Rolex it's a marathon, not a sprint. They've literally spent almost 100 years working themselves into the brand position they are in. You can be sure that given the choice they would rather maintain or improve that position over the next 100 years vs making some additional quick short-term profit. In fact, it wasn't that long ago when you could walk into most ADs and see every SS sports model in the case, and even have a pretty good chance of getting a discount. Rolex has been in the business long enough to know these things are cyclical. I think the one thing that they do need to look at is improving the policies they enforce with their ADs in order to promote a better experience for the end customer. Or, they need to go the Apple route and start opening up 1st party boutiques that are corporate-owned and operated. They could still maintain an AD network, much like how you can still buy Apple products through places like Amazon or Best Buy, but I feel this could make it easier for them to try and ensure that most watches are being sold to end customers, and not being wholesaled to greys. |

I agree with somehow improving the AD experience. Sadly in some countries, it’s pretty much grey or nothing. You are lucky that in the US there is a fair chance to get one for msrp and no doubt if we lived there our family could be considered a valued customer.
That said, you play the cards you’re dealt and overall, watch collecting is still an enjoyable experience in my neck of the woods. |
