Gave them a vintage magazine ad for a Submariner mounted on hard wood for the back of the shop.

This year ended up with:
White Daytona
New Cermit
DJ41 White Smoothy
Today, new 41 Sub No date

Crazy year, they looked after me for sure!

I gave $100 ea. to 2 different SA's in 2 different shops. One that I have purchased jewelry and pre-owned watches from as well as my Tudor this month. He gives me great deals and service.
The other to my Rolex SA because he goes well above and beyond in sales and especially service. He is also a personal friend. I compensate him on a regular basis threw out the year for giving me very fast and quality service. When the watch technician regulated my Rolex to -0/+0 earlier this year, after working with me to achieve this, I slipped him a $100. Which by the way is still running same. Still to the second at this time.

I never said they were mutually exclusive. I like my SA’s just fine. One of them is a particularly nice person. However, if I didn’t have tens of thousands of dollars to spend I doubt we’d have the same relationship and that she would treat me in a similar way. I would also ask folks conflating watch sales with friendships, did you bring a gift of equal value to your car dealer, local coffee shop, barber, fire dept, bakery, etc?

This isn’t to say friendships can’t develop but rather the foundation of these relationships are purely transactional. Most of us are emotional about watches and that can seep into other areas. It’s not good or bad, just being realistic. For those espousing complete altruism in your gifting to AD’s, I believe that you believe that.

Well said. Gave $100 restaurant cards to my AD team. They are good people and the customer service they provide is top notch.

Sent a Christmas card and $10 Starbucks card to say thanks to my two different ADs(SAs). They texted me and said the gesture was greatly appreciated. Not sure if I got moved up the "list" but that wasn't my intention. I just wanted to express my gratitude for getting the call :-)

A lot of this sounds pretty cynical. The staff aren’t your friend, they don’t mix with you. It’s just business. Be polite and appreciative, but that’s all. It’s quite enough.

Hi - I wasn't answering you specifically, just offering a general opinion on the topic. Looks like we pretty much agree. Have a healthy and happy holiday season!

I receive gifts from patients. I can’t do any more for them than I already have, so I take it in the best possible way. I have no hesitation about gifting people I have business relationships with. I have made some wonderful friends as I became a WIS this year. I would give because it’s the season, and I appreciate that some people will go the extra mile to help me, in whatever field that is- physician, realtor, auto SA, whomever. YMMV.

As do I. However, sellers of goods and providers of services are quite different on many levels. It’s literally a sales associate’s job to ingratiate themselves to customers. In most (not all) fields of service it’s an option.

I agree you will be engaging a transaction SA, that’s it.

Now I have a few AD’s, but for Christmas I only have one that I honestly give a $50.00 restaurant gift card and I throw $100.00 in the envelope. He has been very straight forward with me from day one and I appreciate that and we have became friends.

Will this give me pts or an edge maybe but that is not the reason why I give that small gift out. I give it out of heart as I do my other gifts to friends and family. My relationship with my AD is close and loyal; I wait and be patient.

Remember if you are talking about something “fake” or “prefabricated” etc they can tell a mile away. Same goes with gifts for your SA. They will know when you doing it to try to get something.

Don’t get confused with giving a gift for appreciation. Say you got a piece you really wanted this year come Christmas time you take your SA a gift.. that’s cool.

Cool post OP..
