the most ridiculous part of this thread is that you even still refer to him as a 'friend'. this guy was a con artist, straight up. he sold you his USED, one year old watch (which is now worth less than MSRP), and scammed you into unknowingly paying more than market value. he 100% played you and knew what he was doing from the start.

sorry but this is the truth

I don't know anything about the watch but how the warranty card was presented is distinctly odd and not how it works with a new watch from an AD. Somebody wasn't being entirely honest. The question is who, why and what are they hiding?

Getting a watch was a happy thing and all got ruined now. I wish all has never happened or I didn't know about the warranty card and receipt issue. All I can learn is that I won't have large transactions with friends anymore, and I feel miserable about this experience as well as myself.
I guess this is the adult world.

He’s defensive and pissed off because he’s guilty and you used info at your fingertips to uncover his BS.

If his story was true and was a true friend, he would explain why you are mistaken and how/why most in this thread are wrong. Clearly, none of this is the case sadly.

If you’re happy with your watch, be happy. Use it as a reminder why to scrutinize who you let in your circle. Let him go. You’re better off.

Been there, bro. Some lessons are expensive. Learn from them to not make more expensive ones later.

Hi Bustertang. Sorry to hear about the crappy situation. We have all been tricked/manipulated by people at some stage. It’s unfortunate, but this doesn’t make you foolish. In fact you did well to ask questions about the watch, albeit a little later than you’d like.

If you are left with the watch, maybe call the shop and ask if the serial number matches something they had in? If it did, what’s $500 over retail in the long run when you have a classic, classy watch? I think it is something to be proud of, once the sting of your confrontation with the seller fades; what you keep is a great piece and some hard-won knowledge about people.

Enjoy your watch, you bought it for a reason. You liked it and were good with the price.

In 10 years I won’t matter and you’ll still have kick ass watch.

Let it go, work it out with your friend if he was a true friend, if not move on. Life is to short.

That is a bummer. Maybe if it is always going to bug you about the transaction it might be a watch to sell.

there's a very small chance he wasn't doing something shady, there's no reason the warranty card would be from sept of LAST year if it's a brand new watch bought just now. on top of that he's now gaslighting you, so imo that's not a friend and i wouldn't dwell on it too much, red flags everywhere and if it wasn't this then something similar would eventually happen

How could a current watch warranty be activated and back dated 1 year?

I suppose the OP can simply visit the AD with the watch and warranty card and ask what they can tell him about the sale and how much of the Rolex warranty is remaining.

People here also overlooking that the OP is only getting 4 years of a 5 year warranty.

If the AD confirms that the sale was made last year, 4 years left on the warranty, and the watch is legit, at least you know what transpired.

All factors considered, the OP got a nice watch for a decent price. There have been MUCH worse stories around here of people being scammed.

Then keep and enjoy the watch and ditch the friend.

If the watch is fake, get an attorney unless he refunds your money.

How much did you pay? I assumed retail but I’m not sure after reading the thread.

retail + $500 for "dinner" with the SA is my understanding

piece most likely is going for under retail on the grey market though but that's not too much of an issue here

Wow, sorry to hear about this scenario with your friend. I agree with others who have said the reason why he got mad is because you basically called him out. He probably knew that you didn't know much about the details on how the warranty card was dated at the time of sale, and also on the current market of this model? These were small details that he figured wouldn't matter, and that you wouldn't bother researching either. Very sad.

This YM 40 is the 126655 ref on Oysterflex? I've never purchased an OF model myself, but I know that there are different size straps. They need to give you the correct size ones to fit your wrist when you purchase this piece. There is some micro adjustment in the clasp, but the main sizing is with the strap lengths I believe. If you have to purchase new ones, they are not cheap FYI.

Just a thought.....Do you guys think this watch might have been a pre-owned or an unworn traded in piece being sold at the AD at MSRP? Physically a new watch from the AD, but technically not a new watch?

The "friend" didn't want the piece but knew his friend was looking. He saw an opportunity for a "win win" situation....to make $500 plus add another piece to his buying history with the AD?

Pay when in waitlist?

Welcome to TRF

It sounds like you’re being used to pawn off an unwanted watch that’s being passed of as brand new.

On a positive note, at least he has shown you his true colors. I would drop the friend while I’m at it.

Congratulations and hope you really enjoy your new watch.

P.S. I’m on the welcoming committee with both Brians!

As has been said by many already, something not right. I think your friend just made money selling you one of his old watches. I've been on an imaginary "wait list" at my local AD for over two years, if what your "friend" says is true, I'll have almost no warranty left if I ever get the watch.

Thats a crappy situation, sorry to hear that. He has gone on the defensive, but by the sounds of it he as good as admitted the original story isn't legit with the "different people get their watches in different ways" line. When you say after the transaction? Does that mean it hasn't gone ahead yet? Tell him to forget it, he can only end your friendship once!

Ask to see the AD invoice held by your friend? The date of the warranty should match the date of the AD invoice.

I have bought a few watches from my AD and they never back-date any warranty date to the timing of waiting list. It sounds incredible when I read your post.
