Pay when in waitlist?

Dear guys!
I just entered my 30s and decided to purchase my first Rolex. I visited an AD in Chicago and was put on to waitlist for a Daytona. The SA told me it would take more than one year. When I told this to a friend of mine who owns several Rolex, he said I would probability stay on the waitlist forever unless I buy thousands of jewelry from that AD. I decided just wait and see what happens.
About 1 month later, my friend told me he got an allocation for a rose gold black dia 40 Yacht-Master, and he asked me if I liked it. He said he could buy and send it to me if I pay him the price plus 500 for dinner with the SA. I accepted the offer, but after I sent him the money he told me the warranty card would be from last year Sep since he paid when he got into the waitlist, and SA charged to put him on a "real" waitlist.
I don't think he would give me a fake watch because we have known each other for years and we work in the same company, but I feel I get fooled that he just sold me one of his old watches that he hardly wears. What are your guys opinions?

you played yourself, no one knows what your friend will do and regardless is that even a watch you want? also you have no chance to get a steel daytona without spending a ton of money with the AD unfortunately

Sounds dodgy to me as the warranty card is only ever completed when you physically pick a watch up. Imagine if you're on a waiting list for 5 or 6 years for a piece, and then find the warranty card was dated when you were added to the list - you'd have no warranty left!

Sounds to me like your "friend" is passing off one of his own (used) pieces to you.

(And of course to be absolutely certain you could always phone the AD and ask them if it's their practice to complete the warranty card before it's even in their possession! News flash - I think you'll find it most definitely isn't!)

A card does not get dated until it is physically handed over to the customer, it would never get back dated to when the customer got on a list whether they paid then or not.

If you are happy with the watch and price, then you have some decisions to make. Not sure why your friend wouldn't just offer you this watch properly.

The warranty card story on the YM makes no sense and smells fishy.

Something’s fishy. Again, the card would not be back dated. It would be dated the day the purchaser picked up the watch from the AD regardless of when he paid for it. Good luck.

Well it sucks that your friend may have mis lead you, but do you like the watch? I would wear it and take everything your friend says from now on with a pinch of salt.

I do like it actually, and I am fully aware this watch has a market price higher than the sales tag.

not anymore, most PM pieces are going for below msrp. likely your friend knows this and if it actually is his then he wants to get out of it at msrp using you because he can't sell it for anything close elsewhere

Called my friend and got slammed on things about trust, friendship, and the end of the friendship after the transaction. He said different people got their watches in different ways and he was just trying to help me without any benefit of him. Trusting people meeting on-line instead of people knowing for years in absurd. Honestly, I have no method to tell.
Getting a watch was a happy thing and all got ruined now. I wish all has never happened or I didn't know about the warranty card and receipt issue. All I can learn is that I won't have large transactions with friends anymore, and I feel miserable about this experience as well as myself.
I guess this is the adult world.

If the warranty card is dated Sept 2021, the watch was sold in Sept 2021.

With that being said, if the watch has been a safe queen with zero scratches I wouldn't get too worked up. Since you apparently trust the watch to be genuine. Granted you have lost a year of the full warranty, but with the Rolex quality you most likely won't need the full 5-year warranty any way.

don't think you would wait that long for a 2 tone YM from an AD anyway now and a year old card as others have said sounds dodgy.

that said if you like ( they are a great watch ) and happy paying 500 over then go for it.

Ask your own AD for the same rose gold black dial 40 Yacht-Master, if you really like it. Probably only have to wait a few months and you get your own purchase history with them. Your “friend” played you. As far as Daytona, forget about it. I heard people got lucky and get Sub, Sub Date, BLNR or even BLRO as the first watch, not Daytona. Not SS Daytona anyway. Two tone, you don’t have to wait that long though.
