I was a one watch guy for the first 15 or so years of being into serious watches. This past year I tried a collection, again, and stuck to it. I really enjoy having multiple watches, now. Not sure what changed.

If you decide to keep multiple today and change your mind in 2 weeks, it’s always easier to consolidate. Selling all today, then decide you want a collection is harder to come back from I feel.

Option 2 then as time goes on add more to the collection, your collection and taste will evolve.

I’m going to throw in a curve ball.

Get a white gold daydate, instead of the OF Daytona, then add a couple of sports pieces.

Getting something very similar to option 2 but still have variety.

Wow. What a watch
Platinum is stealthy enough to look good with everything
Dinging a sub is prob a lot less painful than dinging a platinum DD

Anyone have any input?
I’m going to be the contrarian in comparison to the other answers you’ve received.

Is your life always one in which a +70k watch would always be at home on your wrist? Are there really no times in a given day/week/month that a very expensive and delicate (compared to a tool watch) watch would be overkill?

If after considering the above you can honestly justify one watch for everything, do it.

If there are occasions when you need a less ostentatious watch, whether because of practicality, setting or pastime, consider keeping one watch for those times and unloading the rest for the DD Platinum.

My 2 cents, let us know what you decide

Plat DD.

Admittedly, I’d opt for smooth quadrant, but fluted Roman wouldn’t get kicked out of bed, either.

I have a PT DD, and I love it! No way in hell I’d have that one, vs those four.
If it were a 2 or 1 decision, a bit tougher for sure. But those 4 great pieces or 1
PT … easy choice for me personally

Keep the Submariner, sell the rest, buy the platinum DD in two years.

Option 2. I have had multiple watches and still only really wore one. As you get older you'll find it better to divest unused items. But, that's just me.

I think it mostly depends on what kind of a person you are. Do you prefer the simplicity of having just one watch, or do you like to change and rorate them?

I'd always want at least one SS piece. Wouldn't go all in on a PM model.

I personally prefer variety. And with the OF Daytona you also have a PM piece.

Option 1 for me.

But if you do go with Option 2, you could get something like a Tudor Ranger or even a G-Shock to go along with it.

I'm all for quality over quantity... but a platinum DD is not "quality" over the others.

Stick to SS for Rolex and move into a real high-end brand if you want PM or a statement watch, IMO.

Keep sub and GMT, and get a 36mm 118206 platinum day date instead. That would be a killer three watch collection and the 118206 is still over 200 grams of platinum

As a huge fan of the DD, option 1 is still so much better in this scenario imo. Option 1 covers every single situation and would be a fantastic 4 piece collection.

I would start with that, and then after a few years of rotation you’ll get a better feeling for what you like and what you don’t like. Then, if you want to part with a few pieces and add the DD then go for it!

Option 2. Less is more approach. I’ve done some consolidating myself with zero regrets.

In many ways, once you go the PM route, SS has a much different feel.

Option 1. A platinum fluted day-date is not stealthy.

Agreed

Not like you couldn’t do a one for multiple if you decided later

Or add one by one after the DD. Nothing like having a grail. I hesitated a tad before I bought my Chocolate 326935, yeah I know not quite the same amount of money but still a good chunk, and did it anyway because I knew I could trade down

As it turns out I absolutely love love love my SkyD and have added a few here and there. Best of both worlds.

There's no such thing as an "under-the-radar" Rolex Day-Date.

Personally, I'd go for the variety, but not necessarily all at once, if that's even possible.

Something to consider. It will be extremely difficult to obtain that many pieces for your collection unless you have a relationship with an AD with a substantial spend history. It will also take a long period of time to build. The Grey Market will assist here, though at a substantial premium.

The Day-Date is much more attainable. Though be aware it is not as "Stealthy" as you believe. Wearing a president gets attention.
