My watch is totally undestated, just is state of the art with resepct to engineering and functionality.
The only place I discuss it is here on this forum - no one has ever noticed I have a Rolex except one person who noted that " I had a new watch..." and then she saw it was a Rolex.
No need to justify why I bought it to anyone! And yes, if it had no Rolex coronet on the dial or on the crownwheel, but built to the same standards within and without, I would still buy it.

Been reading all the posts as its quite an interesting topic but i do agree with you obs!

We all love our rolexes but you don't buy one to say im so understated. for that you buy a casio! You buy one cos of the enjoyment you get out of it. We dont walk around with our arm held in the air for all to see but wear it and who cares who sees it- let them enjoy it too. Why say that you cover it up- get real guys. Yeah i bought a ferrari but i hope no one will see me in it! you sound ridiculous some of you.

People with real money, as in "old" money will try everything in their power not to be flashy. The people they associate with are usually also wealthy, so who are they trying to impress? It's the nouveau riche that have the gaudy clothes, flashy cars, and usually bad manners!!! In my profession I deal alot with vehicles. You'd be surprised at how many of the $40,000 plus vehicles are either leased, or company provided vehicles. I just recently bought my first Rolex. I bought it because of it's pedigree, and workmanship. I appreciate nice things, but not gaudy things.

Okay guys let's calm down a little bit. A lot of you are bashing me up here...

I bought my Rolex for many different reasons.

#1 Its a very high quality product and its going to last a life time. As they say "You get what you pay for." I'm just going to buy 1 watch and be done with it. No need buying new ones after the cheap ones break.

#2 Looks. All of these watches look georgous. And each one has their own style. I DID buy it for ME TO ENJOY IT NOT OTHERS. If they happen to notice, which a few have, then they notice. No big deal. I'm happy to show others, and compliment on their watches.

#3 Name. Some one said that if there was the same watch just without the Rolex crown and name, they would still buy it. I'm not sure if I would buy this. Rolex is known for perfection, and excellent craftsmanship.

#4 Enjoyment. So what if I like looking at my watch? All of you do as well. That's why you are on TRF. We appreciate the craftsmanship and the design of the watch. If you people just bought your Rolex just so you knew what time it was, you wouldn't be on TRF. We are all passinate about the brand. What they are going to come out with next, different movement numbers, servicing the watch...etc

I just got the feeling that you guys think that I bought my watch for the wrong reasons. I honestly don't care what you guys think becasue I know I bought it for the right reasons.

I don't understand why you feel this way. I've read every post and didn't see anything said that would indicate that any of us think you bought your Rolex for the wrong reason.

BTW, is there really a wrong reason for buying a Rolex? Is there a wrong way to eat your favorite candy bar?

If you need a watch (car or any luxury item) to flash and make you feel better about yourself or you just find your identity through these extraneous items, that speaks volumes about yourself and what is lacking. Looking back over my old childhood heroes, it was the man that made the watch cool not the other way around. Sorry to those who mistakenly think that is something you can buy.

I was in the grocery store this morning and some guy flashed me with his Datejust. I returned the flash with my Daytona and he just slithered away!

Worst thing to see is someone constantly looking at their fine timepiece, and you ask them the time- and they have to really look at the dial because they are so wrapped up in looking at the whole watch they never look at the time!

So, again, here's to flashers...
Exactly! I drive a p-car and 2 bimmers but that's my taste. I wear expensive watches for their investment and personal value. But I do like it when I get the attention from the right people, people like TRF folks. Lets admit it, we like it when a fellow watch enthusiast asks about what watch you're wearing. The same thing goes when I drive my cars. Also luxury items tend to compliment each other so it's not uncommon for a Rollie Owner to drive a fancy car or live in a nice house, and vice-versa. Here in LA we call Flashers, Flossers cuz flashers tend to mostly wear trench coats, Rolex optional.

I am a service engineer for a small company. My wage is small but I buy Rolex because I really love the style, workmanship and attention to detail that goes into each watch produced.

My family know about my passion for the brand but I dont parade them around.....I just keep it low key.....For me its more about personal satisfaction than trying to be flash.

Why bother what others think. If they notice, which the majority of people do not then let them see the watch. Otherwise largely un noticed.

Actually, what annoys the hell out of me is people who think I drive a Porsche and wear a nice swiss watch because I'm trying to show off.

The fact is I like quality machinery. I like the feel, the performance, I like the rich history, I like the quality in general. I make sacrifices in other parts of my life so I can enjoy the very best in my car and my watches. I live in a nice neighbourhood as well. That gets some people's back up, but jeez it's a better investment and my family grows up secure and happy.

I suppose I'm showing off to a point, but it's not bloody about the money, I'm showing of my affection for quality. Raising the standard. Unfortunately though simple mind can't usually get past the $ value....they're missing the point entirely.

Sad on one level, but on another more important level....I don't care.

My God! Students must be a heall of a lot better off than when I was one, just about scraped together tuition and food! I would have thought flying to the moon was more achievable than owning a Rolex back then!
How the heck do you get a Rolex while still at school???

I have a corollary. No matter how fast you drive, someone will try to pass you. No matter how fast your car goes, someone will buy one faster. No matter how rich you are, someone will be richer. No matter how big a house you buy, someone down the street will build a bigger one. And no matter what watch you wear, someone will spend more and have one to flash.

Exactly, that why it is useless to compare cost, value or price with others. One mans beater is another mans grail watch.

Mine's a dirty beat up Gilt 5513 on a grey Nato, I couldn't flash it if I tried...
To most people it looks like I need a new watch

I ride a '62 Vespa Sportique, unrestored (ie tatty), and, if I really need a car, I drive an eight year old beat up Audi estate.

So not flash, just cool

you are correct, I spotted at least 3 sales guy's wearing them, however, I was negotiation price. I didn't want to come across as someone who would pay full price for anything! I ended up getting 7k off the sticker on a Honda Pilot. I do believe it worked! I then filled out the credit application and stated my income and put my watch back on, after the price was set!! But yes I do see your point!!
