Flashing your watch.

Honestly, why do some people buy a Rolex to flash it? You should buy it because it is a work of art. (The movement)

I have seen some people wearing a PT DD and driving in a Mercades and all they do is flash all of their possesions. Are there any people out here that love Rolex and are modest?

I suppose I'm one of them. I haven't really told any one that I bought one. I only chose a few friends to tell and that was actually 2 weeks after I bought it. Parents still don't know. I don't drive a benz. Heck I'm still a student in college. Its not in my best interest to go around telling people I have a Rollie. Even if they ask I tell them that its fake.

+1 I don't tell anyone that I wear a Rolex. Many people don't even think my White Dial Milgauss is a Rolex because the orange hour markets are so funky. People think Rolex they think the Submariner, or Daytona. But I have seen hardcore Rolex enthusiasts make close pass by to me to peep at my Milgauss at the gym. I don't flash it in a sense that if I am wearing long sleeve shirts I will pull the sleeves up to expose the watch. But if I am wearing a short sleeve shirt and it's on my wrist it could be perceived as flashing, but in reality I am not.

I'm glad to see that there are still some modest people out there. The point that I'm trying to make is that there are some people who are all about name brand and that they probably bought their watch because it is a Rolex and not a no-name-watch.

There are still some people out there that only buy name brand. Look around and you'll see them. Callaway/Nike, Benz/Cadillac, Rolex/Omega.

Lets focus on how accurate the movement is, the craftsmanship that went into it, and how Rolex goes out of its way to please its customers instead of "Dude! How much did you pay for that?" "Is that a Rolex?"

My vote: I love the artistry and engineering of precision and perfection. This is what draws me.

Also, the great fellowship here at TRF.

I don't flash my Rollie but I don't go out of my way to cover it up either. I wear it and enjoy it, and I don't give a hoot what others think of it.

I DO like the fact that I am way more cool when I have it on!

No flashy here! usually cover it up. Especially in Church. I wear it for myself to enjoy! I wear long sleeves as much as possible. I scratch it up enough at work. I think the GMT II-C is new enough that only the fanatics know about them. I haven't met someone outside of the Rolex dealers ask me "Hey is that a new GMT ?". Only us watch nerds!!!

I actually took it off when buying a car last week. I will start a business later this year and I will never wear it. I will try to appeal to an average income level, I don't want to come across wrong in my sales approach. I'll have either a second watch by then (can I write that off?) or just take it off.

Is wearing short sleeve shirts considered flashing your watch?

I dont knowingly flash my SD, but I do like to own good quality items, just because someone drives a Merc does not mean he is flash, it could be that he saw the same qualities in the Merc as his Rolex, ie fine engeneering and craftsmanship, but unlike a Rolex you cant cover a Merc with your sleeve.

I dont drive a Merc but if I could afford it I would be tempted.

If we concentrated on accuracy as previously suggested then any quartz watch will do. I also wonder how many of us would buy a timex branded watch that had a Rolex movement inside rather than the real deal.

You can wear short sleeve shirts just as long as you take measures to cover your watch. This would be the best way to make sure your not flashing it.

From talking to my friend in the car business, I'll bet there are more Rolex watches in a car dealership than your average business. The more successful the salesman or manager, the more expensive the watch is.

Any car dealer workers here to share their thoughts?

I think that as a car dealership owner, you should wear it. It shows people that your business is successful, and that many other people have purchased cars from you before.

However, don't flash it. If they happen to see it, they see it. Understand?

My watch

My watch has been in countless housefires, carfires, and to many car accidents over the years. Hard to see under my coat.

I own a Rolex, and I drive a Benz, but I purchased these for one reason. I appreciate the craftsmanship, timless design, and enduring quality of these things. My benz is 20 year old 420 S class, and I also own a 32 year old 240D. Neither of them were particularly expensive, but after many years they look beautiful and run flawlessly. I count on them every day. I expect the same of my watch. This is the value of these things, not the flash factor, in my humble opinion. Cheers!

I don't flash. I show my friends my Rolies but flashing in the open in most states could get you arrested..

Why must we beat the crap out of each other? There are idiots all around the planet. No one who frequents this site (loves Rolexes and maybe a few that even love all watches) falls into this group and any comment they make as to IF and WHY anyone would do this is pure speculation.
Ahem, it's MERCEDES.

I'm not trying to beat "the crap out of each other". I know that all of you obviously love Rolex for the right reasons.

I'm just trying to ask you guys, why some people would wear it for the wrong reasons. Is it because of the price? exclisivity? name brand? or status that comes along with it?

I got the " you are showing off!" thing when I got my Porsche- then I had the windows tinted so you couldn't see me- or my flashy YG DD, GMT or AK. No one could figure it out. I wanted to drive the car for the pleasure of driving it- not being seen. Same for my Rolex(s).

Worst thing to see is someone constantly looking at their fine timepiece, and you ask them the time- and they have to really look at the dial because they are so wrapped up in looking at the whole watch they never look at the time!

So, again, here's to flashers...

I don't flash mine, but I usually wear short sleeves. I haven't worn my SD for a week now... the Breitling is taking a good chunk of wrist time lately :)

People who are in the know see it and appreciate it. I don't flash. I've had some people say "nice watch" and others say, "yuck". To each their own. I respect that.
