I could stare at those pictures for hours.

If I every hit it big I'll own 50 watches the next day and this is at the top of that list.

If the retail is 29,850, the AD buys it at least 40% below retail (there was another thread in the forum that agreed on this) or 17,910 roughly, so if the AD sells at retail, then he makes 11940 less his overhead costs. These watches don't move that fast due to their price, but are very nice (I've seen a couple sitting at local AD's for a couple of years)...so I think you can do better than 12.6%/$3600 discount....that's my opinion....20-25% at least and they will still makes lots of money, so shop around. I'm guessing a gray market watch (new with papers) would be in the low 20's....you can check in with some of the well known sellers (lots of posts) in the for sale section of this forum. Good luck!

Yep, I've seen them in the low 20s. In the event that you buy it from an AD at the price you quoted and one day want to flip the watch, the depreciation will be painful, to the tune of $12,000 or more from what I've seen other white gold sports models go for.

I have the TT blueface. Dial is the same color but I think the print on the WG face and bezel being white vs gold changes the look somewhat.

I sure wish pictures of this beauty would stop being posted, it's becoming more and more difficult to turn away. My "short" wish list keeps getting longer and longer and longer.

Some may say how can anyone justify the acquisition of a tool watch in a precious metal. It's like buying a Ferrari to tow a trailer of tradesman's tools.

I guess that notion assumes that a Submariner is only a 'tool watch' intended for diving purposes.

However these days the reality is that Rolex Submariners (SS, TT and 18K) are common place among people wearing suits and sitting behind a desk all day long.

To that extent the precious metals do serve more of a jewellery or aesthetic function than a tool (diving) function.

Most Submariners (including stainless steel models) these days would be lucky to ever see the bottom of a 10 foot deep swimming pool let alone anything like 300m.

The WG Sub is just a different price point and aesthetically different to the SS model.

I guess on those emotional and aesthetic terms, that justifies the existence of any WG Sub, YG GMT or Gold Daytona.

When I bought my gmtiic (on layby) I got to try on this beauty a few times  and I love it! Definatly a Grail for me :). The manager offered me a 20% discount on it (and they never EVER discount!) and said I could layby it for however long I need to, (at 50k AUD it would take over a year on my salary :P ) and I did think about it but the 20% deposit was about the same price as my GMT!!! :O
So I declined! But one day I will buy one :)

It is a hunk of gold; probably goes 190 grams. A stunning watch!

Rolex does white gold right; their process resists bleed through that other manufactures have that rhodium coat.

This thread got me motivated to stop by the AD and look at one.

"Good morning sir are you looking to add to your Rolex collection" (noding to the SS submariner on my wrist)
"No I just wanted to stop in and see the white gold submariner in person" before this she was reaching into the case to pull out a 116610LV so she stopped short and grabbed the Blue WG. I was half expecting to get stone walled after I said no I wasn't buying so I said "are you going to let me try it on?"
"by all means, you have to feel the weight difference from yours, it's amazing"

It made my day, I highly recomend to anyone else to stop in and try one on. It took few minutes to wipe the grin off my face.

I like the look of the blue dial as it appear in my avatar.

I made my avatar by taking a screen grab off a YouTube video of all things

I find the blue a little flat (matter of taste), but the white gold is certainly rich looking. Wish they would put the blue ceramic/blue face in an all stainless model, but that wouldn't likely happen due to Rolex wanting to keep certain features exclusive to the high end models....so it goes.

Thanks for all the great pictures.

Cheers

Although I agree with you on everything you said and especially the real field of use of these watches nowadays, I for one as a diver who always take one of his Mechanical timepieces underwater cannot see a diver's watch in something else than S.S.

Even though I dive with 1 or 2 dive computers, I like to always take along one of my mechanical diver's watches for redundancy thus greater safety...and of course pure pleasure and enjoyment.

Perhaps that 'll explain a bit the way I feel towards these beloved and trusted little things that if they are not completely the tools they used to be ( thanks to new technologies) they are still not completely jewelry...at least for me.

I would'nt mind a WG Cosmograph or Day-Date, or...But for me 904L is as precious as I am willing to go for a divers' watch. Less is more...

Blue being my personal favourite colour and Rolex divers a weak spot of mine, I guess I am "lucky" this beautiful piece is offered in gold only...so I am much less prone to watch envy here.

Of course if a gold Submariner floats your boat ...Then more power to you !

Is this watch 14k or 18k?
Do you know if even the crown, clasp or the small link bracelet-case are made of gold?
What is gold melted with?

It is all 18K i.e. 75% pure white gold. Rolex makes this metal using platinum to form their own special unique version of white gold.

As a tool watch, stainless steel may be a more preferable material to most. It all depends on your tastes and circumstances. For example you could be an underwater photographer who has little chance of putting it trough hard times and the WG model may be fine.

Red Adair was famous for wearing his 18K yellow gold Day-Date in the fighting of oil well fires.

One has to remember that Rolex makes a lot of watches with luxury materials including diamonds, even on a Submariner. In that regard, the model is still rated to perform as per the stainless steel specifications, just that it has added luxury materials.

So it comes down to personal tastes and preferences....and how much you are prepared to spend too.

I found a mint "used" one local for $21k.... I'm willing to bet they would go down to $19k.

My wife would divorce me... AND probably get the watch as the settlement!

One thing I can tell you is that the weight of it is amazing on the wrist! It feels so good!! Nice and heavy and it looks amazing too!! So if your wife leaves you over it--at least you will have an amzing watch to keep you company--it might be worth it! Remember --there are always other fish in the sea--and you only live once so go get yourself one!

Ken do you think the WG Sub is heavier than the Deep Sea Sea Dweller?

Steve- I think it is heavier--certainly feels heavier on the wrist. It feels really good-almost like what a platinum DD felt like to me vs. the gold DD.

I found out that the weight of the WG Blue SubC is 230g...almost 1/2 a pound

According to Peter (Padi) the weight of the DSSD is 215 grams.

Maybe the WG Sub is the heaviest watch Rolex made because the platinum added to the WG must make it heavier than YG. However maybe the Platinum DDII would be the ultimate winner in the heavyweight contest.
