The difference is a private company and a public company, the goal is the same: to maximize profit. Judging from the raise in prices by Rolex every year they are not exactly doing it as a non profit hobby

I'm of the view that watch buying is mainly an emotional decision (at least it is for me). So what appeals to one person's eye may not to another's -for example, I think the YM II is a very handsome watch but I know from posts on TRF that the watch has quite a few critics.

PS I think the JLC looks great and as a brand it has impeccable heritage. If you think it looks better than the Rolex and will enjoy more wrist time, then go for it.

Good luck!

I've mentioned it before, but I've been lusting after it so long, and drop by an AD every now and then to have a look at it, so I'll do it again.

The Master Ultra Thin Moon 39!

Grey prices have crept into the $6k range, which makes it affordable in my book. I'm still waiting for a used one though.

Mmmmmmmmm! That is one hell of a nice looking reference! Love the moonphase! I will go back and review the other models! That damn Duometre line had my eyes closed!

except that the 372 was never listed as a SE or LE, but, rather, a regular production model, so, i'm not quite sure to understand the criticism....

don't do it. i owned the navy seal auto 42mm, straight out of the box brand new:

ran +18 secs 1st day(24hrs)..
then +12 secs 2nd day..
then found out the little minute markers on the rehaut did not align properly to the lume indices, the '60, '30', and '45', most apparent on the 6, 9, 12 o'clock lume markers.

sent it back via AD to get it fixed,
waited almost 6 months..
came back still the same!!
the annoying rehaut is still mis-aligned
the watch still runs fast, +8 secs under 12hrs running.
only difference is the bezel feels tighter(there was a bit of loose/play on it before)
and.. there's a scratch under the crystal, i believe it's on the AR coating.
also, almost forgot to mention, the caseback came back with scratches on it! it was a 2-3 days old watch when i sent it in, no way the scratches were there before!

long story short, a total dissapointment, in the approx 6 months i had the watch, only wore it a couple times for a couple days, fyi: i got it for my own birthday present last year, no way i'm going to send it back and wait for another 6 months. did not bother to even complain to the AD, took a bath selling it, and i'm now happy with the replacement. a rolex which runs +1 sec/day. ofcourse, i would never touch another JLC piece.

if you really want to scratch your itch for a JLC? i strongly suggest looking for a pre-owned or used piece so u don't lose much down the way..

I'd get a master calendar, master geographic or a master moon ultra thin 39 without a second thought Like others have said I'd rather just add to my current collection

While it's a shame you had such bad luck with your JLC, such things can (and do) happen with every brand.

As far as brands go Rolex can't really compete with JLC. Rolex makes tractors. That is not a criticism of Rolex, on the contrary, that is what Rolex is all about. Tough and reliable watches made for professionals. JLC has a very wide range, maybe too wide, since they go from simple sport watches to very complicated watches. They have built movements used by Patek, VC and AP as well, with a couple of hundred different inhouse movements developed.

Rolex and haute horologie is so distant they don't even send mail to each other.

My main man Kevin Bacon. I agree with everything you stated with the exception of the Haute Horlogerie bit... Prior to the Duo line I do not think you could have stamped JLC with the HH moniker... IMO that is reserved for Patek, Vacheron and Lange... JLC has just begun to pull on their coat tails on the HH front... Interesting as I did not know Patek, VC, and AP has used JLC movements, can you provide which models?

Sure thing Sam! Off the top of my mind, but I bet there are many more examples: Patek and AP used a movement by JLC in the original Nautilus/Royal Oak watches. Vacheron has a long history with JLC, they merged at one point back in the day I think. The current VC Overseas date model use cal. 1126 from JLC. They have also used a JLC base for their ultra thin watches. These companies mentioned have finished the movements to their level and added/subtracted stuff. You can take a look at VC OS's dual time vs AP RO's dual time, vs JLC master geographic to see small differences on the same base.

I would add Audemars Piguet to your HH list (putting aside the independents of AHCI and looking at mainstream brands only). If you look beyond the obvious emphasis by Audemars Piguet on the Royal Oak, you will see some really superb complications, finished to the highest standards, in the Jules Audemars and Millenary ranges (also the Royak Oak range).

You could also add the likes of Cartier and Harry Winston to the HH list.

As for the Jaeger-LeCoultre movements used by Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, the obvious one is the calibre 920, manufactured by, but never used by, Jaeger-LeCoultre themselves. It's the Audemars Piguet calibre 2120 (and derivatives); the Vacheron Constantin calibre 1120 (and derivatives); and the Patek Philippe calibre 28-255, used in the original Nautilis. It is considered by many to be the finest thin automatic movement available.

Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin still use Jaeger-LeCoultre designed calibres, but I don't think Patek Philippe do anymore, although you will find Jaeger-LeCoultre/LeCoultre ebauches in vintage Pateks Philippes. There is even a vintage Patek Philippe Reverso out there...

Very interesting Daniel! I really had no idea about the other power houses utilizing JLC movements! Which goes to show you that I have a lot to learn when it comes to horology! I've been tasked with Homework offline by Ken so I will be using my lunch break to research all of this! Thanks again sir!

It is the reason why Jaeger-LeCoultre are often referred to as the "Watchmaker's watchmaker".

That sucks man, and sorry to hear about your experience... On the contrary however, I have the same piece and it is flawless, in everything you mentioned that was wrong with yours, is perfect on mine..

I also have a master compressor chrono 2 LE ceramic, it's also flawless as well..

Going to add a 3rd soon, then a 4th and 5th :) JLC is too special, I'm off my ap kick and whatever other brands I lusted for , owned and then didn't see what the big deal was.. JLC is just super exclusive to me and oozes quality and craftsmanship.

Now, this may be a shocker however. To the original poster, I wouldn't give up let's say mt gmt ii c as a daily wear to daily wear a JLC... I think the Rolex (dependent upon what you have model wise) is way more versatile... But for a weekend/special wear JLC over Rolex any day :)
