Why is there no COMEX issue SDDS
Strange when you think that COMEX was directly
involved in de development of the SDDS ( I believe they also build or helped building the giant pressure cooker to simulate the pressure at 4000 m to test the watches) that they not have ordered a batch for their divers . We saw the special police task forse divers in Italie order 78 normal SD where they had the option to do it with the SDDS. I can hardly believe that in case of a company as COMEX that it was the price tag that put them off . Or does this mean that COMEX only rely on more functional dive computers even as the traditional "back up " watch . |

Not sure what the attraction is to COMEX...I suppose rarity in terms of the old co-branded Subs...but I would not want one myself.
The Italian Police Sub with the Octopus on the dial and/or a Red Sub maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe. |

Personally I believe COMEX has more prestige within the diving community then any police force divers group . Maybe US Navy seals or Royal navy divers ?

Military and police dive units rely on tax dollars to fund their units, rather than commercial contracts that require them to operate at a profit in order to remain viable. For a police unit or military unit to purchase a Rolex (using departmental funds) would be akin to setting tax dollars on fire. Chances are those Italian police SD’s were purchased at a reduced rate, and also offset in cost by the individual purchaser. Nearly every military has two divisions within diving; one is combat diving, and the other is salvage diving. Like the Royal Navy, which has combat divers and salvage divers, the Aussies & the US have their respective disciplines as well, both maintained separate, as their mission profiles differ quite drastically. This has been somewhat obscured in the recent years, at least with the US, as the global war on terror has changed some of the mission profiles for the salvage diver. I would assume the same applies for other countries’ military divers as well. In the commercial diving community, there are numerous companies whose accomplishments rank right up there with COMEX. Same goes for military & police units. Chances are you’ll never hear about them as their logo won’t ever adorn the dial of a Rolex, and they don't advertise their accomplishments. However, this shouldn’t fool you into thinking they’re any less significant than COMEX.

COMEX really involved with this watch? I know they were involved with the original Dweller but...? Seems more like Panerai was involved or rather Rolex's desire to market a Panerai size watch? If it wasn't for the increasing popularity of the Panerai and other behmoth watches I doubt the SDDS would have ever come to fruition.

not for retail. 100 dials for one reference is a rarity, and much sought after. ![]() |

Would agree except very limted production and the dials are specially made by Rolex for Comex and the case backs are all numbered with a unique number by Comex only. Its like the many posts on TRF about the case date stamps, watches are all the same for years. But they must have the latest case stamp or think that one modern day case stamp will be more valuable than any other of the same watch.
