Funny Observation

I lent my 16610lv to a friend for a week since he couldn't find his Seiko (mine is insured so wasn't too worried.) Just got it back today and laughed at how many scratches he was able to put on the bracelet and head in 6 days compared to how many I've put on in a month and a half. I do not think I'm overly obsessive about scratches but while I'm wearing my watch I am usually pretty careful not to bash it against things and not letting my wrist rub over services unnecessarily. I picked up a scotch pad, pulled out the cape cod for the side of the head, and now it looks fantastic again.

I've read more threads than I care to with comments from the obsessive cleaners and the people who appreciate their scratches... BUT I was wondering if you scratch lovers are still careful with your watches. For you desk jockeys, do you not rest your wrist in a way that would swirl/scratch your watch?

First, I have never heard of anyone lending someone their Rolex! I would never do this, but more power to you...

I am pretty scratch aware. I touch up the brushed bracelet areas with a bergeon tool:

I just ordered a cape cod cloth for the shiny bit on the case...

As long as I am the one beating the watch, it is all good...

I just wear my watches. Scratches and all. I am more careful however when I wear an acrylic crystal watch. I don't polish the scratches out, but I try to avoid new ones.
I was initially very surprised that the acrylic scratches didn't bother me. If they get to the point that I can't read the time, I'll know that it's time for some polywatch.

fortunately i wear my watch on the right hand, and as a desk diver myself i just rest my right hand on my mouse pad while working, how easy is that? there is no way to scratch it

don't mind scratches, as long as they were done by me.

I'm always careful when I'm handling other peoples properties.

I lent my TT Blue to my buddy for 6 mo. he took good care of it and I just have to give the bracelet a good wash.
It depends on who you're dealing with. But it can be restored to new condition easily.

wow!

I have to suggest that loaning something so valuable is a great way to ruin a friendship.

I believe in wearing and never babying a Rolex. One of the reasons to buy a Rolex is the toughness. It isn't a piece of crystal, and almost anything can be polished out.

I agree.
Ive lent friends many tools or what not over the years but never heard of someone lending or borrowing a watch! I would rather lend a buddy $30 to buy a beater watch till he got a new one before giving any watch let alone a Rolex. Why would a friend even need a watch that desperatley he would have to borrow one. Doesnt make any sense.

Wow, your buddy couldn't find his Seiko so you lent him a Rolex? I can't find my Lexus, any chance you've got a Bentley I could borrow?

I wear the heck out of mine and will spend $100.00 bucks to get it polished later.

No problem at all!

I painted my Rolexes with polyurethane, which is very scratch resistant!

No worries.

I can see helping someone out of a pinch but "lending" a wristwatch for an entended length of time (overnight) is a bit much. I would never ask so I would never expect anyone else to ask of me.
Getting a Rolex was a very big deal to me and that may be the difference.

On one of these "whim" flights of fancy you dont put on a watch? Do you also run off without your shoes or wallet? And then you ask your friends for all the basic necessities"other than the clothes on your back" Some friend you are!

And the OP was talking about a friend who "lost" his own watch and borrowed one for a week not someone who had all his stuff stolen out of town. And I wouldnt think someone would feel the need to borrow someones Rolex in that case either.

I have several "loaner" watches I'd be more than happy to give a friend in need. My YG DD is not one of them.

I dont know what relevance that sentence has.

Anyway, I'm just glad you're not a friend of mine knocking on my door, I'd be pretending I wasnt home.

When I got my watch I was very carefull about not scratcing it. Now, I have many scratches all over it,especially on the clasp. As far as lending my watch, If I had an other Rolex I wouldn't mind lending one to a VERY close friend for a week or so,but having only one, no chance in hell. Only my twin brother can have it any time he wants to.

lol. im not lookin to argue here. i just dont understand why someone would think it a big deal to borrow a watch. believe it or not some of us dont really care that our watch is a rolex, patek or whatever. i have a dodge nitro in the garage. i have an f355 spider in there and a couple in between. if you needed to borrow a car i dont really care which one ya take. it's a car. same with the watch. at the end of the day it's a watch. i promise not to knock on your door. i dont do the island. i have bad memories of the nassau coliseum...

I lent my Seiko black monster to a friends daughter. They came on vacation and she wanted to go diving but forgot her watch. Even though there is an assigned buddy system when diving from a commercial boat, I wanted her to wear a watch. My Black Monster fit perfectly over the top of her wet suit.

That said, ain't nobody gonna get to wear my Rolex until I am dead and buried!

No arguement here either, just a difference of opinion. I can see myself saying to a friend "I need to borrow a watch"! Its not a necessity like a car for an important meeting or something along those lines. Lets not forget everyone has a cell phone today and they all have clocks installed (as far as I know). But, to each his own. If you need to borrow a watch while out of town thats cool with me.
