My 1965 5513 back from service
On recommendations from fellow forum members, I gave my old 5513 to Max in Sydney. He's done a wonderful job. Evidently the previous owner had it serviced by a butcher with a chainsaw. The dial is 100% original, the plexi is aftermarket. The case has not been polished.
I couldn't bring myself to shell out $1000 on a bracelet so I bought a NATO-style strap. Without further ado, here t is.. |

The watch looks nice but I don't like nato straps. If you really want a SS bracelet, then I would talk to Steve Mulholland and see what he can come up with for a bracelet. An original bracelet would look soooo nice on this watch IMO.

I noticed that Pete and thought of making the 900 K's dash down. However, I would be driving as I like to check out the antique shops en route, there's always something to be found, but it's just too close to New Years Eve and I wouldn't want to be on the roads with the drunken hoards at that time
Have a good one and I will check in next time maybe |

Max did the service for $440. I paid cash and avoided the 10% tax. I supplied my own aftermarket plexi. He threw in some genuine spingbars. The ones I had were aftermarket ones holding on the jubilee bracelet it had when I got it.
I do admit to being a cheapskate and I have skimped on the bracelet and the "high dome" plexi. The Rolex equivalent of having a Maserati and filling it with the cheap petrol. I will be in the USA in Feb so might try and find the right vintage bracelet then. This 5513 sits up incredibly next to my 2000 non date 14060 and the NATO strap is a nice point of difference when they are side by side. I will take a pic of both so you can all see what I mean. I am now updating the my camera's date. PS keep me updated the the Sydney GTG. |

It looks like that NATO strap is a little too wide.
Is it 20mm Otherwise the watch looks excellent. Max has given that a new lease on life

I finally figured out why you see so many older Subs on NATOs. The bracelets don't seem to stand the test of time as well as the watch head. Oh well, to be expected I guess.
I just ordered a NATO-esque strap from http://www.gasgasbones.com. The guy is in the UK. He will make a strap to fit your wrist. Most are intended for Speedmaster Pros as they can be made with patches commemorating moon landings, but I think the one I am getting will work very nicely with my Sub! I opted not to get a patch. |

Re Nato's
Thanks for the info Peter, that service sounds like a good deal.
I have found that the Nato straps, although looking good on most of my sports vintage watches, because they sit between the back of the watch and my wrist they just lift the watch that bit higher off the wrist and I am lately prefering a bracelet which allows the watch to sit down on the wrist. I guess I might have to try the individual Nato side straps |

I ordered my NATO strap from "west coast time". Abot US$16 delivered to me here in Sydney. The quality appears pretty to be pretty good.
I accept what Phil says about the NATO making the big Sub cit a little higher off your wrist, but I think the unique and old school feel the NATO gives the Sub more than makes up for it. And ... if a springbar breaks or pops out (does this ever happen), the NATO keeps the watch attached to my wrist! |

Adrian's 1961 Tudor Sub is amazing. There's something about the old watches with a really "lived in" look. Mine has been well-looked after but one that's seen a bit of wrist time certainly has appeal.
Re the questions about the width of the NATO. It does measure exactly 20mm and is very snug fit through the lugs. |

I'm a newbie here and learning. My 5513, purchased new in July of 1967 and on my wrist ever since, is a "meters first" Submariner. Your watch, which pre-dates mine by two years is a "feet first". Can someone enlighten me. I thought the "meters first" watches were older.

Beautiful 5513, Peter. In my mind the perfect Sports Rolex, it has that clear semitry in its design with the maxi dial. Under rated and still comparatively affordable to the masses of Rolex fanatics ;-). Thank you for sharing.
