5513 questions

I am considering picking up a 5513 sometime in the next year or two (depending on what I find, etc.). I currently have a z series 14060m that I got a year and a half ago to tide me over; do you guys think it's crazy to replace the z-series 14060m with a 5513 as a weekend watch?

I have always wanted the 5513 with matte and no surrounds, and would even buy head only to throw on a nato.

What should I expect to pay, look out for, and where is a good place to start my search (other than here, where I have seen only a few).

Thanks

Here's a pic of my 14060m, since I know people love pics:

Heavens!, not crazy at all. It is a question as to which reference, movement, features you prefer or will suit your style.

The 14060/M of course has the modern fast beat movement and sapphire crystal that is much more forgiving to scratches than it's acryllic counterpart. Certainly if a measure of luminosity is a factor, the modern reference gets the nod.

Having said that, the 5513 takes a back seat to nothing as far as accuracy, durability, and of course history.

These were the references the legend that is Rolex was built upon and as such hold a special place of honor among collectors.

The 5513, properly serviced, not only makes a great weekend watch, but one fully capable of donning the mantel of a daily wear as it has done from the beginning.

As an only vintage or part of a collection the 5513 serves as a conerstone of a storied past.

Pricing of course is a function of condition. I've always felt it's best to get the best possible example you can find. The few extra dollars are well worth it.

Mike,

Your 5513 looks museum quality!! I think I may focus more on 5513 or 1689 white. All this lurking on the Vintage boards is really helping me to know what I want.

Now I can peruse my Mondani Submariner Book a little more intelligently.

Well, get ready for an aggravating time right now. I have a Pristine all tritium no Patina 1680. I was selling it to get an Equal condition Maxidial 5513. Not only can I not find one....but the few I have found, the owners are asking $5k PLUS. Sorry, but I am not paying what my 1680 is worth for a watch with a less complicated movement and no date. WTF????

I would never pay more than $800-$1000 less than an equal condition 1680.

The market is what it is right now and for some reason sellers are asking a huge mark-up for 5513. I would wait until the stupidity subsides. I am in the market at $4000 for the right 5513.

Many will disagree with me. I don't enjoy baller status so I know that if I sold my 1680 or traded even for a 5513........I would lose my ass on the 5513 6 months later when the rage calmed down. It is frustrating as hell right now, so I have pulled my 1680.

You're right about disagreement. Just because you type it with conviction, doesn't make it so.
Your comparison of a 1680 vs. vintage 5513 is just that. Your opinion.

If you like your sophisticated movement so much, then keep your beloved 1680 Date Sub.
To make any 5513 owner feel like they're overpriced on their Maxi Dial is rediculous to comment on, just because you can't steal one.

$4k will eventually get you a Luminova version 5513 at best.
Greekbum has one for you now in the forsale section.

Also, not sure about reference, movement and features...what exactly do those terms mean relative to the 5513? Is there a site like this one for the sub that can help me?

http://www.gmtmasterhistory.com/

Thanks

They mean the same to any watch: the reference (or case /model no.) is 5513, the movement is the type of mechanism inside the watch and features well are features ie rotating bezel, SS construction, waterproof to 660 ft etc

other references for subs 1680, 16800, 168000, 5512, 5513, 14060 etc

hope that helps

Not really related to values or procurement, but one of the reasons I am a fan of the 5513 is the domed acrylic crystals. The 1680, of course, has the date feature and some have red dial printing obviously, but those vintage domed examples are wonderful!

Bought this one a few months ago for $3200. Foolishly I sold it, albeit at a profit...they are out there.

This is exactly what I am looking for. Sorry I was not interested in buying your watch. Regardless of price, it was not in the condition I was looking for. Get past it.

H, Your ignorance is showing. It must be real bliss for you.
I wouldn't let you steal my 5513, you got called out and your feelings got hurt?....I won't fly as low as you.

So glad you shared the fact that you stole one so to speak. a 5513 for $3200.

Let me go out on a limb here. You got tired of it and only sold it for $3250 right?...lol

Btw, saw a pic of yours below. Mine may lean to the right, but it's still bigger than yours. Keep beggin' for a 5513 from a distressed seller ouschba .

Ok, I'll go against the crowd here and say Don't trade, save up and get the 5513 as an addition to the 14060.

I've bought and sold 2 5513s, beautiful watches and very accurate with service. However, if you're an active weekend guy... sports, swimming , the plexi will scratch and with quite a few there's leakage problem due to hardly visible corrosion in the case and case damage (caused by repeat change of crystal) around plexi area. 5513 doesn't have a rubber o-ring there as the 1680 if I remember correctly.
Think of the 5513 as similar to a vintage sports car with all its pros and cons

Here's a pic of my 5513 that's now gone

I may not have much cred here but can you two people take it off the forum please? It's pathetic seeing this negative behavior from what I assume should be professional adults on a Rolex forum.

As you can read after his first post, he didn't like my defending the value of a 5513 just because he got one on the cheap.
Originally I had responded to his request for a 5513 MAXIDIAL posted in the classifieds, but he wants to buy them for what he thinks he should pay, and made it seem like anything over $4K was just wrong for real examples that were not Frankenwatches. I'm not in distress, and don't need to sell. But to me, the responses were wiseacre.

Please read our first two threads, as each are our opinions.

But you guys are right, It's the Holidays, and I'm over it. No more responses to pettiness.
