Red 1680 or 'Triple 6' SD?
Which is more desirable in your opinion?
A ‘Red’ 1680 (open or closed 6) or a matte dialed 16660 SD? From what I have been seeing they are very close in price and I like them both…but what do you think? Long term, is one more collectible/desirable than the other? Why? And please, let’s not let this decay into another trolling/name calling/etc. debacle…

I like the Red Sub. It to me is more iconic.
But the choice of cyclops or non is purely personal. |

For me it is no contest. It has to be the red sub. It is instantly recognisable compared to the sea dweller, which is hard tell from other dwellers. If you were to get a sea dweller save up and get a 1665. But that is my opinion, go for the one that rocks your boat - forget the investment part. If it makes money in the future then it is a bonus, either way you would have enjoyed the watch.

Mike, I think the red Sub would be the best value. There seems to be a very stable collector market for those watches, along with the double reds.
It seems like every vintage collector of sport watches covets the older Daytonas and red Subs the most.

I like the triple 6 matt. I think it's a great watch. Having said that there's always been something special about Rolex and RED.

Never been fortunate enough to find a red Sub in my price range so I can't help you with pics.
I tried to buy one from a local guy a few months ago, who wears it daily, but he had no desire to sell or trade for it.

John- I'm with you...probably out of my reach, but you never know.
Mike- Thank you for sharing and (as with all your watches) Anyone have a shot of their matte 16660?

Although not in your list my favorite watch is the GMT.If all watches were the same price and you told me to go to the table and choose 1 I would still pick my GMT over all of them.Buy the watch that you like.I would not speculate on what might be worth more in the future etc.Who knows? I would narrow it down to a few say 3-5 models you really like and than wait and search until bamm a stunning example of 1 of them shows up.You will have to pay up for the nice ones the owners know they arent depressed merchandise but IMHO a PRIMO example of any of them will always be worth more than 1 that is not as nice. Box and papers are nice to have but few will pay more for them.Stay away from over polished cases, questionable dials, mix matched hands, wrong case backs etc. Leave those for the bargain seekers. They will tell you its the same.Be patient and you will find a nice watch
Whatever you choose I wish you all the best

From a supply standpoint, there are far less matte 16660s than red 1680s.
From a demand standpoint, there are many more folks who consider the red 1680 their "attainable" Holy Grail of Rolexes. From a market standpoint, it does seem as if the matte 16660 have jumped in value recently and are approaching Red Subs in price at the top end. Me personally, I've always chosen that which is scarcer over something that's more readily available. I'll post pics tomorrow..... |

I would love a nice triple 6! IMO, you see much less of them when compared to Red Subs...that said here is my 1st Qtr 1970 Red Sub!

Hmmmm...pretty close on the opinions. (as I expected)
Nikos- as John can confirm, I'm with you on the GMT's. I'm just thinking of something different for my next piece. Scott- I like it! Thanks for the photo. I'm still torn between the two and luckily (I guess) I don't have to make the decision right now...will have to save for quite a while before either is a reality. And when I actually have the funds it all might get complicated by a mid-'60s PCG 1675 w/ small GMT hand.
