automatic mechanical movement??

guys sorry this is a newbie question.i'm new to panerai, starting to learn. what does automatic mechanical movement means??why mechanical? is rolex movement also auto mechanical?? do you need to manual wind pam watches every couple of days or it's same as rolex just wind it once and it wont stop as long as you wear it or put it on a winder.. the term mechanical makes me think that the watch needs to be wound every couple of days.. I'm sorry for the newbie question... and does pam has a quick date set?

Some PAM's are manual wind...primarily historic models. Some are traditional automatic, as long as they are worn they continually run. A PAM just like a Rolex when first put on usually requires 30-40 turns of the crown to get it started. That is usually a sufficient amount of turns to get it started.

To clarify, they make BOTH manual winds and automatics (like the Rolex). Both are recent models.

The 312 is an automatic.

... and FANTASTIC!

The 312 is a traditional automatic yes, meaning there is a rotor that winds the watch as you move your wrist. However, manual winds are on different models...which Panerai calls Historic. You can buy a brand new 2010 "historic" Pam that you have to wind every few days. So old pams are not necessarily wind and new not necessarily automatic, you can get either one brand new today. The movement is specific to model not to age of the watch...hope that makes sense.

Some manufacturers (such as TAG) make ranges that include both mechanical watches and quartz watches and the term mechanical is used in this context. Automatic wind as you state is like Rolex i.e. and automatic wind using a rotor which winds from the wrist movement as opposed manual wind watches which require winding up every few days usually.

All PAMs are mechanical watches, however, as others have said they make a mix of automatic and manual wound watches. Hope this helps.
