I found this to be the case with the first Rolex I purchased...a 16610 a few years ago. I decided I wanted one, and salivated over the pics on this forum for a month or two. Then I actually held it in my hands...soooo small in person. I had a total Dalton (from the movie Road House) moment: "I thought you'd be bigger."
I still loved the watch, so I bought it and wore it. And I bought a few more after that. Now, it doesn't look small at all. In fact, my Explorer II (on my wrist right now) seems kinda big--I certainly couldn't imagine wearing anything larger. I wonder how many of the "I can't wear anything under 44mm" crowd would feel the same if they wore a Sub for a few weeks.
