Icon14 Quality fountain pen question

I won't take my my Mont Blanc Diplomat on my deployments but was interested in knowing what you guys think I should look at getting for a fine quality pen that will stand up to deployments in austere environments?

Also, what would you suggest for an all metal mechanical pencil?

Thanks in advance!

Something cheap and durable is probably your best bet for a 'combat' fountain pen. Perhaps the Waterman Phileas or a Lamy or a cheap Sheaffer. Phileases are tough, but light and so they'll put up with scrapes and bumps without adding to your luggage-weight.

I have had a waterman Hemisphere mechanical pencil for years. All metal body and as tough as nails, nice to write or draw with as well!
The ballpoint from the same line would do you well in the situation you will be in, not sure a fountain pen would be all that practical for combat situations, ball point or rollerball would be best!

Waterman quality and not too high a price!

I have the brushed finish and it has had everything thrown at it for almost 9 years and still looks new!

A fountain pen writes better, though. If he's going to be doing a lot of writing, he would be wise to pick a fountain pen.

I usually have a couple of Fisher space pens with me for everyday stuff but I miss having a nicer pen to maybe write a letter or to sign certain documents. I usually travel with a small Pelican case or Otter box to hold a few delicate things when headed out the door. That way, it can sit in the bottom of my rucksack with no worries. Finding a tough "quality" pen that writes nice is another thing. I'd also like to find and all metal mechanical pencil as well.

Thanks for the replies so far.

For a "tough" fountain pen a Lamy Safari comes to mind. If you want something a little nicer that won't break the bank, I have to suggest a Sheaffer Prelude. I have one and I love it, although be warned that I've heard of quite a few of them having issues, luckily mine has not. As far as an all metal mechanical pencil I'm pretty biased to the Cross Century I. Not the newer Century II model as I find it a little to thin for my tastes. At any rate I hope this helps!

I don't know if such a thing even exists, but there is a ballpoint pen produced by Parker, called the JOTTER. It comes in various colours, but it's also manufactured in brushed stainless steel. If there's a mechanical pencil version of that, it may be exactly what you're after.

Glad to hear it Frans! Yes, it has been far too long. School and sports have kept me far too busy. Go for a Pelkian, you know you want to!

From experience the toughest pen is the market is the Rotring 600.
This pen feels like its indestructable.
Its a full metal pen is a good writer.
