Icon5 Daytona or Submariner?

Lately i have been looking to buy a second Rolex for my collection. I can get really good deals on both a Daytona (white face) or one of the new Submariners with the Ceramic bezel. I will post photos of the watches i am talking about later today. But the question is would you buy ether a Daytona or Submariner?

If it is truly a "collection", then the obvious choice is the Stainless Steel Daytona....especially if you can get a really good price....

If it's a watch that you intend to wear a lot, then get the one that you want to put on your wrist... The TT ceramics will be around for quite a while...

Well not a fan of the modern Daytona and not a huge fan of TT watches ceramic or aluminium. But IMHO its down to your personal choice only, both very different watches try both one that smiles back most thats the one for you.

do you like that fact that it does not have a Date? i have a daytona but i'm a slave of the date in the watch, i do use the chrono feature but normaly nobody use it quite often... so think not just how it looks but if you really gonna "use" the watch...

I think the sub would be better to have on the wrist.

I already have my Daytona and I love it. But right now, I'm currently looking for a Green sub as well. I think the sub links will not attract as many scratches as the glossy links. But, I'm just saying this in my own opinion, I would get the Daytona as its a must have in any collection!

I truly value a watch with a date function, so for me the Daytona is out purely on that basis.

Although not a big fan of the Daytona, it's still one helluva good looking watch with probably the best Chrono movement in the world.

Question is: Do YOU like it? As an invesment, it's terrific, but if you plan on keeping it, you've really got to like it yourself.

Otherwise, the TT Blue Ceramic Sub wouldn't be a bad choice at all.

Good luck - JJ

At the current MSRP for a SS Daytona, I would not buy one. There are so many other nice watches/brands out there once you are around the $11K price point. Same point applies to the TT Sub, I was fortunate to have purchased both about 4 years ago when they were more reasonably priced. There are several models out there that have my eye if I were top spend that much, a Blancpain 50 Fathoms is on my shortlist.

I remember before the SS Daytona fashion trend. I have watched the beginning of the SS trend and the absurd notion that a SS Daytona will cost more than its precious metal 18K gold TT Daytona brother. The bubble is going to burst on the SS Daytona. Supply and demand will only take the false inflated price so far. Imagine if the SS Submariner had its price falsely inflated over the TT models.

Buy the TT Submariner. The some of its parts represents its true price more accurately without outside influences.

I use it for cooking, parking meter and playing with the tachymeter when I am not driving.. but real use where seconds matter, not too much. I just like the way the seconds hand sweeps through the dial...

Daytona. Or a black faced TT Sub Ceramic, if you widen your search.

The Daytona is a very sweet watch but I find the Sub/SD/GMT has a lot more daily functionality with date and timing bezel.
