Because anything that does not burn oil / gas is squashed. There are several examples of vehicles that get 100+ miles per gallon but for some reason, those designers dissapear, give up, or sell the plans to the oil companies... No, I don't hear or see black helecopters around my house...

Internal combustion engines are far more efficient than even the best steam entines. Steam engines don't run on water; they must have fuel.
