Opinions on RAP music

Hi all.
A while ago Taffi Abernathy (?) posted a thread that asked what music or song you really couldn't stand. I am sure I didn't word that exactly as she did, but on to my question. RAP......
I grew up in the 80's and 90's listening to RAP. As I have gotten older, I have selectively changed what kind of rap I listen to, and have indeed changed it to more of a Hip Hop. What is really funny, is throughout my time when I was in the military, I never stopped listening to rap, but I started to like rock, alternative, metal, oldies, hair bands, R&B, and country. Most rap fans don't touch on any of that other music which shows their ignorance and intoloerance to expand their appreciation of music. When I read the posts on Taffi's thread every 2 or 3 was I can't stand anything rap. What is it you dislike about it? The cursing? The themes? The Violence? The music?
If you dig deeper than just your conventional rap there are a lot of very talented musicians. For example, a few years ago I went to an Afroman concert (of the "Because I got high" fame) This guy who sung a song about marijuana was slappin away on stage with a double guitar! Plus there is rap, or as I categorize it "Hip Hop" that doesn't use curse words. I seem to appreciate good music, any genre. I also appreciate good musicians and ESPECIALLY good lyricists. I do like Ludacris, because he delivers lyricism on a whole different level. His punchlines can't be beat, and he raps with a comedic twist. So what is it that you don't like about rap?

I can honestly say that I like all kinds of music including Rap, but I can't stand the Rap over the past 10-15 years with all the "gangster" crap.

I may be an old fart (44) but I have to say that I have never liked Rap music in any of its so called "stages of evolution".

There's good and bad in everything. Some RAP music is very good, Biggie comes to mind.

I don't like violent rap music (gangsta rap).

I listen to music to relax or get in a particular mood. And never have I felt the need to be in a violent mood.

I don't like the image most rappers put off, They always have to say how much something cost or how gangster they are, I stop listening after that. I am not saying every rapper does this but the ones that do give everyone a bad name

There is a clear line between Rap and Hip Hop. Some straddle the line and are successful at it, like Jay Z for example. Brilliant man, IMO.

As far as other acts - there are very few, sadly. The Roots, Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, De La Soul, Method Man - those are about all that's left. Roots played one of the best live shows I have EVER seen, and I've been to some epic ones.

That said, I listen to just about all genres, excluding Techno and Country.

It all depends on what kind of Hip Hop / Rap you listen to.... there's a TON of ignorant retarded rap songs out there. But with that there's a TON of really good music as well. I listen to it quite a bit, but I stick mainly to older 90's stuff - I can't get down with the Soulja Boys and 50 Cents. But I'm also into basically everything else - from Chris Isaak to Guns N Roses to Lynard Skynard to Fiona Apple - good music is good music.

So what about rap appeals to me? Easy, I like the rags to riches success stories - people who had a passion and busted their hump to make it, rappers like the ones Mosco mentions. IMHO to come from nothing and make something out of your life speaks volumes rather than to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth.

I am very musicaly diverse I love all forms of music. From Sinatra to Buddy Guy to Metalica GNR Alice in Chains (my all time favorite)

As far as Rap I am more into the older stuff

Classic rap and hip-hop is great, but the genre degenerated over the years. In my opinion, the same thing happened to country music.

GREAT RESPONSES! Most had a good argument, some had none, just a dislike for it.
I just wondered because all throughout Jr. High and highschool, I would listen to nothing but rap. In fact i talked bad about all kinds of other music becasue of how ignorant and intolerant I was toward music in general. I look back and see such a ignorant kid, uneducated in all that is music and has both positive and negative influences in our lives.

MOSCO: everyone on that list I agree with. Those are the good guys! Even when they get a little poliitcal, the vibe of their music and lyrics is enticing to listen to!

I like Kanye West at first, but then he made himself look bad on too many ocasions. Although I like some of his music, I won't buy it because of how innapropriate he has acted in public.

The old school rap going all the way back to the fat boys, ll cool j, sugar hill gang, and all the rest of those times are so awesome as well. I look at RUN DMC and Aerosmith's WALK THIS WAY and think how groundbreaking. I like Fort Minor and Gym Class Heroes as well. rap/rock/funk is sweet! there is an underground group called Typical Cats, those guys are some amazing lyricists!

GREAT ARGUMENT!!! I agree as their has been a lot of cross over success into mainstream pop music. Not much more blue grass or true country comes on the country stations anymore!
