Snowmageddon in W.PA

So,...last night around this time, I thought the brunt of theblizzard was s'posed to be in eastern PA. But it kept up all night here in SW PA as well. Here's what I woke up to around 9 this a.m.
There's a Chevy in there somewhere

Quickly dug a trench to the Man-Cave where the cellos reside. That lump in high center is a 740i.

Snow stopped about noon-ish, so later I strapped on the old mil-surplus snowshoes, the old style that look like tennis rackets, only these are from the '60s and are made of mg-alloy frames with aircraft cable mesh. Off I went on a trek around the property.
First a spot check measurement:

Some scenes

I hear the Philly end got around 28", and my friends on the Jersey Cape report power outages and high winds in addition. Meanwhile NYC must have got missed. Too bad Kyle didn't take me up on the wager !

Worst single event I've seen since Winter of '92-'9 (us farmer-types tend to have very good memories for precipitation anomalies).

The damnable thing is, we were supposed to be on the NW fringe of this storm, and our weather gurus were saying 8-10". I have a John Deere Gator with a plow that can handle 10" but it's useless for 2'...but, I could have been making periodic passes throughout the night. Lesson here is: never assume !

Unbelievable how it just veered off out to sea.

Oh well...tomorrow I have to shovel out by hand, so if you're not too busy, grab a shovel an' come on down !

Nice photos David! My parents are in East Liverpool, and got up to 27". Amazing snow... I was in SW Virginia in '92 and the "storm of the century". (Still have the tee shirt. HaHa!)

We got a few inches today, but probably only a couple of feet on the ground here in Anchorage...

Take care and enjoy the snow. Not much else you can do. Thanks for sharing the pics!

Great pics Dave. I don't envy you guys at all. That's a lot of snow to fall at one time, even for us. I know that a lot of cities that are getting hit aren't equipped to remove it that well either.

We're in an El Nino year and it really messed with the weather pattern. We average about 100" of snow every year. We're somewhere in the neighboorhood of 15-20" below average for this time of year.

When it snows it's only been dropping about 1"-3" at a time. We had a few in December where we got 4"-6", but that's been it. It's still early here, so anything can happen yet. This week looks pretty calm so far. I figure if we get bythe week of Feb 14th-20, it won't be that bad. Anything that comes after that, won't stick around for that long.

I know how bad these type of storms can be. Feb 14th-16th of 2007, we got clobbered. 20" on Valentines day, then between the next two days, another 20" fell. Christmas day 2002, 24" Brutal stuff.

I don't wish this stuff on anyone, but I'm glad it didn't make it this far north. it is a skier and snowmobiler's paradise.

Good luck shoveling and make sure you reward yourself with a beverage of choice when you're done

Looks like it was pretty windy as well. Here in my corner of Canada we've dodged the bullet so far this season, nothing more than a few dustings.

Repent mortal, for thy end is near!

As Safe pointed out, we have a lousy weather day here in San Diego, rainy and 56 right now, but nothing compared to your situation. It is beautiful, but I'm sure glad I'm not there! So, figure you'll be able to get out of the house around... June?

Are you on public water or wells?

I run off a 100 year old hand dug well and the winter snow pack provides all our drinking water - and with 2 teenage girls we need every drop for 40 minute showers!

Snowfall total so far this season -

Washington DC 64"

Portland ME 35"

(and do you have any neighbors? It looks like you own half the county)

I have spring water. The lower level of the tan building houses the reservoir and the filtration system. The humidity from the basement rises to the top floor, which makes it perfect for the cellos in the winter.

There are several houses down the private road, but everybody pretty much keeps to himself.

Unfortunately, nobody was interested in enhancing any cordial neighborly relationships this afternoon, while I spent 6 hours hand shovelling out about 80' of driveway.

David, we got wacked in the western Philly 'burbs. I was lazy and had my driveway plowed this time. They are calling for a potentially big storm Tuesday night into Wednesday. Oy vey!

I'm still able to stand upright after yesterday's one-man shovelling party, but I don't know if I'd be able to withstand another hit anywhere close to that. I heard roughly 28" in Philly. I think I would have paid somebody to plow as well.

28" officially at Dulles Airport, which I live near. 24" in my yard.

I used my X5 to "plow" a path to the road. Accompanied by shoveling when it got high-grownded. Took the wife and I 2.5 hrs to get it about 100ft or so. Once we got the "path" to the road, we said screw the rest. It will melt...eventually...hopefully.

Wish I had a gator with a plow!

Not for this. Gator just sat in the barn. The plow attachment has been a major disappointment.

Even if you stayed on it by making several passes while it is coming down? I can see how it would be pretty ineffective once all 28" was sitting in a pile on the ground already. I would guess that's when you need a dozer or something big like that (Bobcat or the like).

Guess I should reconsider a plow attachment for my riding mower for next year . Would you recommend just a regular old snow blower?

You make a good point - IF I had stayed up all night, then yeah, the Gator would have been OK. My problem was most of the snow fell between 12 am and 8 am. I had been teasing Kyle late Friday night about NYC getting hit. We only had maybe 4 inches then.

My next move is probably going to be buy a blade for my big tractor, which is a 95-hp Case.

OK, but remember: I saw 2012. When the earth's crust starts to shift, causing massive earthquakes and tsunamis an' stuff, coastal CA is the first to get it !
So there ! Hah !

My mom is so fat that the last time she fell out of bed it was 1989 and it was a 7.1 earthquake in California.
