How much does lume matter to you?
I like and prefer bright glowing lume, but am on the fence wether its worth the $$ to have my tritum dial and hands swaped out for luminova..

It's important, but not a deal-breaker. Otherwise, I wouldn't own a Rolex.

I would never swap out an original tritium set (dial & hands, dial only, hands only) in favor of luminova. Even if, let's say, I was looking for replacement hands as the originals were in really bad shape. I would seek out a nice, correct set of tritium hands. Likewise, I would never consider putting tritium in a luminova watch. This is just my

Yes, it is important to me. Only time I'd consider not doing it if it caused the watch to loose value. If it wouldn't cause it to loose value (could keep the originals as an option) or didn't have any plans on selling it and wanted to wear it daily I'd replace them.

i've not missed it since i got my vintage OP date. if i hold it under a lamp it charges it to last a few minutes but i haven't had a situation where it has been a problem so far.

I think that most people would recognise that Rolex fall woefully short in the lume department.

Maxi all the way. Bigger hands means better lume so we have better legibility day and night. I would put maxi dial and hands in my 14060 if it were possble. maybe LV hand set.

I am a lume JUNKIE!

But when lume is important I wear a Marathon or Ball watch.
Its not often I need super long strong lume but when camping or hunting I tend to wear my Marathon because of the lume.

Lume on my sub nd is virtually useless anyway. Luminova seems to fade quickly qucikly. For sure wouldn't change out the hands for the reason even with Luminova it's still pretty unspectacular in the dark.

Rolex lume is pitiful--makes no sense to me that they can't use the same stuff Omega uses, which glows like a beacon. And lume shots are all deceiving--everyone's watch glows like that 30 seconds after you hold it under a lamp.

But, as others have said, if lume were your deciding criteria, you wouldn't own a Rolex. New hands and dial will help your lume situation, but I still wouldn't rely on Rolex if you need to be able to synchronize air strikes from a dark foxhole.

I'm no expert on vintage Rolex, but I don't expect your mid-90s Explorer-II to skyrocket in value over the next decade. If you do decide to swap, use an independent watchmaker and keep the old hands and dial just in case.

I have never understood why Rolex can't seem to "get it right" with lume.

Seiko's Lumbrite is amazing. The Traser combination of tritium and phosphorescent gas with it's ugly little capsules will glow all night (and day).

Heck even the Citizen Ecozilla will glow almost all night.

I would love a Rolex which could be reliably read at 5 AM without strain, but since that is unlikely in my lifetime I'll just have to live with it.

I can see where it might be, but it's just a bell/whistle to me. If I am in the dark, calling in air strikes, or in a cave and I aint got no flashlite, then I am in trouble.

You can't use a flashlight when calling in air strikes--the bad guys will see you. I'd like to think that all of those Special Forces dudes who wear Rolex do so because they're the perfect military watch, but it's just not true.

Well boys, that is one use for your shelter half, so's you can get under it with your flashlite and read the map!
In a firefight, if you are looking to see what time it is, well, it is up!
Also, in the Marines, too often you are calling in the strike on your own position and generally the time is now!

No, Not at all really! Having said that most of my watches have it but in truth I never really find a time when I need it practically and when those rare moments occur the lume does not work as the watch spends most of it's life under my sweater sleeve so it does not charge up!

The only time I see the lume working is coming in from outdoors in the summer and I notice the glow but that is it!

I find most lume fades too fast, the only exception being on my Seiko OM, man that lume can act as a flashlight!

In fact I was thinking about this the other day. If I was going to get just one watch, an expensive one, that would see me out on this mortal coil then I probably would plump for a non lume watch, that way there would be no degridation of the lume material!

Some say the light colour helps with daytime reading but I must admit the easiest watch these middle aged eyes have been able to read, apart from a Timex easy reader has been the Rhodium dialed Datejust with romans. That was the clearest dial I have seen in years!
