New to Panerai

Im looking into possibly buying my first panerai and was looking for some advice as to which model to go for. I like the looks of the PAM 50. Id like the watch to be an automatic, steel bracelet, and a black dial. Id prefer the 40mm case as I have a bit of a smaller wrist at 7 in. Date feature is a must for me. Please excuse my ignorance and lack of knowledge here but I really just dont know where to begin and I would appreciate any and all help you can give me. Also about what can I expect to pay to for a used PAM 50?

Welcome Eric -

7" is not really that small a wrist ...I would strongly recommend that you try some 44mm models before you make a decision.

A PAM299 would meet your criteria

Cheers

Once you go 44mm, you never go back. Trust me, I knew.

If you go for the 40mm you will be making a huge mistake.

Trust me, the 44mm is what you want. It is the essence of the brand and it really doesnt even wear that big.

7" is perfectly fine for 44mm.

You might want to consider the 44mm version. With a 7" wrist you won't have a problem wearing one There are petite girls running around with Rads for chrissakes, lol

I have 6.5" wrists and wear 44mm just fine. I was exactly the same as you. I wanted a 51 first time (white dial, 40mm, bracelet).

Now, I just want 44mm Leather.

Have you seen these?

Yeah, but truth told, the 45mm Radiomirs wear much smaller than the 44mm Luminors.

True but it's still a 45mm case. I also came across a pretty lass no more than 5'4" that was sporting a 24

I always just assumed the 44mm would be too big but I have honestly never actually tried one on. That 328 looks really nice as does the 329 and 299. Could anyone please explain the differences between the three to me? The leather straps are growing on me alot but Ive always been a bracelet kind of guy and for the price of buying a bracelet seperately, I figured it made more sense to get it with the watch and then buy a strap later on to have the best of both worlds. Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys, keep them coming!

Another vote for 44mm. Depending on how much you plan on spending I think your options would be the 328 or 299 or unless you have a need for a GMT function which would make 329 or 297 as your choices.

So what do you all think about which model to get, any pros/cons of the 328 vs the 299?

The difference between 328 and 299 is that the 328 is a 1950 casing, with in-house movement, sandwich dial without date magnification.

Ive heard the term sandiwch dial and paint dial on here before but would you mind explaining the difference between the two to me? So the 299 doesnt have an in house movement? Does it use an ETA movement instead? Sorry for all the questions, like I said earlier I am completely new to the world of panerai.

Look at this link for the dial differences:

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=113893

The 299 is based on a Valjoux 7750 movement.

Eric, id suggest to try on a 44mm at the same time also.
Wheni first wanted a Panerai, i tried on the 40mm white dial on bracelet (i tnink its PAM51) and thought it was fine on my 7.25" wrist.
After done a few research and had an opportunity to try a PAM000 and PAM112 last year, i got hooked on the larger size and thought it wears similar to most of my other watches.
Fast forward a couple of month, the urge for a PAM came back and was lucky to see a new 000 at an AD and bought it.

So.... Give both sizes a try and decide it for yourself... The bulky crown guard on Lums will take a little while to get used to, but after that, it will wear nicely.

Btw - if you get the bracelet version, you can also change it to other straps.

im 5'7 and have a 6.5 " wrist.

the first time i saw a panerai i thought it was the most ridiculous looking watch ever, in part because of its massive size.

2 days ago i bought my first 44mm pam and i must say it is the perfect fit for my wrist and i couldnt be happier.

go with 44mm, you wont be dissapointed!

I once thought that the 44 was too big on my wrist...which I think is small. Well, needless to say, my 104 looks great on my wrist. I love it and so you will. Best of luck.

I would look into the 359. I believe its a new model for 2010 and I really like that it utilizes all of the arabic numbers and does not have a date magnifier. I am new to Panerai as well but can not seem to get that watch out of my head! I think its fair to say that I am starting to become a Panerai fan.
