Photocopy of Warranty Certificate?

Did Rolex USA Dealers ever give a photocopy of the warranty certificate at purchase instead of the original? What would be the reasoning to do this?

Only if they are willing to take a photocopy of my money!

I remember a while back on here, someone said that the AD kept the warranty card - needless to say, everyone thought that was crazy!

Let's see what others say.

Are you considering buying a pre-owned watch and offered a photocopy certificate? If I were you I'd check which AD is written on the certificate and contact the AD and ask (provided it's still in business of course).

It is a 1987 Datejust originally sold from an AD in my area that is now out of business. It includes all boxes, booklets, warranty holder, hang tags and is legit. I was just wondering if anyone had ever seen this before.

If no-one here is able to confirm that this has been AD practice I'd get in touch with Rolex USA in NY and ask them if they know about it.

I would guess that what happened is, somewhere along the line a prior owner held onto the original paper for some reason or just couldn't find it, and the copy went along with the watch.

I have never heard of this occurring unless the original was lost or destroyed.

The seller is the original purchaser and he was given only the photocopy, which has all correct serial numbers, etc. It is not filled in as to name, date etc.

I received a photocopy of the card when I purchased my EX1 last year.

The card arrived the following month, filled out, to my house.

The ADs explanation was that if I decided to return, or trade the watch in the

allowed time, the card would not have to be replaced, which would cost the AD

50USD.

Please remember that not all ADs follow this policy!

I bought an A series Datejust as my first rolex and the owner said all he got was a photocopy of the certificate when he bought it. I was skeptical when I bought it and this was one of those things that bothered me after the purchase. I called the AD listed on the photocopy and they said that for a period in the late 1990's and early 2000's they adopted that policy. It was due to the fact that many owners trashed the papers after purchase, then came back for warranty work and they (the AD) got stuck with 2-3 hours of convincing Rolex that the warranty work should be covered. I asked if he could provide the original for my collection and he said that after the warranty period expired the originals were sent to the original purchaser for them to have. They did verbally confirm that my DJ was purchased from them and could only provide a duplicate photocopy of what I had.

Note: I sent the watch for service and everything checked out!!

Only in the USA during this period 1990's-2000's would buyers be so cavalier as to trash papers and boxes and be so dependent on the AD to fix their problems. Or, maybe money was so plentiful that they did'nt care or bother to be prudent as we are today........

That is the only reason I could think of, and I imagine it happened to more than a few people.

In any event, I pulled the trigger and sold my 1965 Date model 1501. I bought for $1100 a few weeks ago, had it serviced for $180, and sold it for $1300.

I found a nice gentleman on Craiglist selling a 1988 Datejust 16220 with box, hang tags, and booklets and papers...and this is the picture from the listing, showing the photocopied paper:

I asked him if he had the original paper and he told me that is what he received. He was asking $2600 for the package. I offered $1800 on the phone and we met. The watch was pristine. The gentleman was older, retired, and his wife was with him and when I asked why he was selling it, he said he barely ever wore it. Judging by the condition, he was honest. I paid the $1800 and now have a great 16220 with sapphire crystal, all boxes and booklets and a photocopy of the warranty.

Would I prefer the original, yes but I understand why it was photocopied.

I have heard of it a few times, but it wasn't common practice. The watch you purchased is very nice and I'm sure the gentleman was honest in details concerning the warranty paper.

He was in his 70's, showed up to meet me with his wife. I talked to both of them for quite a while. He used to be in sales and bought it to "fit the role" he said, but he barely wore the watch. It is running +1 sec a day so I am thrilled, and the condition is 9+. The fact that it had all the booklets boxes and hangtags was what sold me on it. Tought to find the complete package for a late 80s watch.

Well, if the original AD was still in business, I too would rectify the situation, but I am satisfied with the copy. Many 1980 vintage watches for sale don't have boxes let alone booklets and papers.
