"Price check, aisle 3"

Picked up a 1988 16200 Datejust yesterday in near mint condition from an older gentleman that looks like was rarely worn (and it wasn't according to he and his wife). The boxes look brand new, includes all hang tags, booklets, warranty holder, and the photocopy of the warranty (Apparently Bailey Banks and Biddle in Burlington MA kept the originals - they are now out of business). Extra links, green sponge protector and receipt from a cleaning done by Bailey Banks and Biddle also included.

Running +1 sec a day, needs nothing to be done to it, bracelet has zero stretch...zero. Paid $1800. Thoughts?

1600$ would have been a more appropriate price I guess, but given the watch conditions I would say not bad. Congratulations .

I offered $1600 on the phone, he balked, so we tentatively agreed to $1800 over the phone. Once we met and I saw the condition of the box, papers and watch, I knew $1800 was fair, since the watch does not need service and looks almost new. I would say $1600 would be a good price if it needed a service and if it did need service, I would have insisted on $1600.

Hey Pete,

I think the price is O.K. you could have done a bit better but what's more important is that you like the watch. Enjoy!

$200 is not much to pay for the secure knowledge that the watch was exquisitely well taken care of for its entire life.

You have a time capsule there -

As my old mechanic once said to me "The worst thing that ever happened to that car was you bought it..."

Nice watch.

Will it still look that good in 2038?

Not second guessing, just seeing what ya'll think. I am happy with the purchase, and will be putting the dial and hands from my 16030 onto this watch, and putting this dial on my 16030. That way it will have superluminova dial and hands on the "newer" watch, making it more appropriate.

This is the dial that will be switched into the "new" 16220:

I think you got a good deal & please excuse my ignorance if I'm missing something....
but why are you swopping the dial?

I mean.... I agree the other face is more modern but what will you put in the 'donor' watch?

The silver dial from the 16220 will go in the 16030 donor watch. The black arabic concentric dial was recently put in the 16030 after I purchased it on Ebay. It was from a 116200 DJ of recent date. The 16030 is acrylic crystal, and the 16220 sapphire, so it would be a better more modern look to put the black concentric arabic in the 16220.

Ebay is where I got mine, and this is the dial I have wanted since I have been into Rolex watches. In my opinion, it is the most legible Datejust dial available, and also my favorite dial of any DJ dial I have ever seen. I paid $400 for the dial alone and it was worth every penny! It is the only DJ dial I have ever found myself staring at many times throughout the day.

My favorite part is that the arabic numerals are luminescent, and they really light up a room at night!

When my local watchmaker swaps the dials he always changes the caseback gasket and pressure tests. I may also have him put it on the Vibrograf and give me a printout. But I know they are both running +1 sec a day.

I think $1800 is good for both seller and buyer - I have a 16234 2000 model DJ for sale now for approx $400-500 more.

If you are looking to "flip" it, then $200 makes a difference in your profit margin, if you are looking to enjoy it, it's only $200. I am with you, worth the extra money to see the condition and care given to the watch.

Enjoy it! And I still hate agreeing with you and that GIANT Red Sox avatar of yours!
But, you do have great taste in Rolexes so you can't be a bad guy!

Be good,
-Pete

I am only moving it, not really touching it. The 16030 will be 100% authentic (because that is the same silver dial available on it originally), and the concentric arabic will be closer to authentic.

Well, here it is after the swap. So now that beautiful Black Arabic Concentric dial is on the more age appropriate sapphire crystal 3135 movement of the 16220.
