First post - Bracelet screw question

Hey guys,

I finally got a GMT IIc and I love it!..but being a little new to this I just wanted to ask a quick question.

I noticed the screw heads on the bracelet were a slightly burred after the AD sized the bracelet. Is this normal or am I being silly by letting this bug me?

Thanks

Jim

Welcome to the forum Jim

It's always difficult getting the screws out, especially as they're glued in place with loctite. So, sometimes some marks can be left on the screw. Won't affect the security of the bracelet though - I'd be much more concerned if the bracelet/case was scratched

I think this typically happens when someone inexperienced does the sizing with an incorrect sized jewelers screwdriver.

If a proper size, good quality screwdriver and proper technique are used, the screws should not be marked.

All the people who work at a jewelry store, including your Rolex AD, are not necessarily qualified or experienced at this fairly basic simple task.

So do you guys think I should go back and demand they put some new ones in / do it properly or just take it to RSC in London and stomach the cost (how much would new ones be?) or am I being stupid?

Personally I wouldn't bother, the bracelet is sized to fit you now so you're not really going to need to unscrew the screws in the links anymore. Just enjoy the watch.

A picture of the screws would help, but I don't think it would bother me. I would just enjoy the watch.

Exactly! I would have the burred screws replaced if it was me, especially if it's a brand new watch.

If you need to use a loupe to see the burrs, then you may be a bit obsessive.........

If it is obvious and they are badly damaged, new screws should be fitted..

Some things -

One, most ADs don't even have the right screwdrivers on hand. At our shop we had to grind a flathead down until it matched the screw perfectly without any slack. Sometimes the loctite holds them so tight it can be difficult to extract them without leaving some kind of mark. So please, forgive them if they occasionally nick them. I've never done it on a client's watch, but I did do it on my own bracelet, if it makes you feel any better.

Two, it's made of metal, not diamond. It can be smoothed out and polished back to as-new condition in minutes if you bring it to a goldsmith and ask them nicely.

Three, Rolex is always willing to provide a free screw or two if there are issues, particularly if you lose one (as in it falls out of the bracelet). Ask nicely.

Four, and most importantly, if they sized the bracelet, then you have extra screws. Just have them swap the burred one for a good spare. Ask nicely.
