How can I tell the year of a Rolex?

Hi - I'm new here so forgive the ignorant question. I just purchased a new Submariner for my husband. The dealer said it was a 2010 (the last of the model before they switch to the new bezel). How can I be sure that the watch is a 2010?? THANKS!

The most recent serial number is the V series, which should be etched on the 6 o'clockside of the watch case between the lug holes. But IMO a Rolex's birthdate is when it is bought from the AD and not when it is actually made, so an M or V series should suffice.

An older M serial can sit at a dealer's shelf new and unused for up to a year, and I would still call it brand new.

To know the watch's manufacture date, you can have the case opened and the caseback should show the quarter and year of manufacture (ie IV 09).

I personally wouldn't open a case just for this info and would be satisfied with either an M or V serial.

Hope this helped.

There have been reports of a random serial number. Guess it's Rolex's way of messing with our heads.

Not sure yet, but we've seen very few of the last run on the older one the 16610 that came with some randon numbers and letter... and that should be the case for the new models but not known yet.

Yeah, Rolex is rumored to have stopped using letters. This means that 16610 subs with these serials are going to be short in supply later on.

I guess eventually they just run out of letters!

One more question - do you guys know when they are changing the look of the bezel and face of the Submariner? My husband wanted the last year of the old model so I want to be sure that I got the right one. THANKS so much for everyone's replies!

The new Ceramic Bezel Sub was just launched at Basel. My guess is that they won't hit dealers until summer. The 16610 was the most recent model,so you're good to go!

edit: Oops! Tony types faster!
