GMT II recognizability

Hi guys, is the GMT II Coke/Pepsi recognizable amongst the non-WIS masses? Everyone talks about the Sub/ Datejust being recognizable.

I was under the impression that the coke/pepsi is not really recognizable as a Rolex. I kind of like the fact that people who don't know too much about watches might just think they are just funky looking and different but not really know it's a Rolex. Perhaps I'm mistaken, though.

Your thoughts? Thanks....

FWIW neither my GMT nor my Sub have ever received a compliment from a non-WIS. My white dial Explorer II, however, gets some attention. Go figure!

Thanks. Yeah...I don't think most people notice watches. But was wondering that, if they do ( in reference to the cokes/pepsis), will they know it's a Rolex. Just curious

I don't know. When shopping online at work and a co-worker saw a Pepsi I was looking at, we started talking. I was saying I love the Rollies that are undercover and stealth.

When she saw the pic of the Pepsi she stated, "Everyone know's that is a Rolex."

She is a non-WIS.

Most non-WIS don't know what a Rolex looks like at all... it doesn't matter the model..

And GMT's are even further from the grasp of most people..even those who do like watches...

Mrs Tools and I both wear Rolex most of the time.. I was wearing a black/red GMT during a conversation with some friends on a Cruise Ship last year ....... The conversation got around to the snobs, wannabees and other Ship board types...

They began to talk about the better-than-thou types wearing their "Rolex watches" and strutting like they owned the ship..

We both nodded politely and together we put our hands in our laps and exchanged a look............ What did they think of us ?...or did they even know what a Rolex (or Rolex owners) looked like.........

Lol, Larry, Sounds like you could start a thread on Ship board types... would have loved to been a fly on the wall so to speak on that discussion

Just my 2 cents here, but in my opinion, the general masses will not have a clue what kind of watch the GMT is when they see one.

Cheers,
Joe

I've only received one compliment on my GMT and it was from a friend of mine. Although...she didn't have a clue what type of Rolex is was but she knew it was a Rolex. Almost 95% of the time, nobody will know that it is a Rolex you are wearing and knowing what type it is gets even slimmer.

As Larry said, most people don't even know what a Rolex looks like - I presume they must think it is some magical, diamond encrusted thing that keeps perfect time

Anyone with a modicum of fine watch knowledge will recognise a GMT Pepsi - it's one of the most recognisable watches. However, I only really notice mine getting looks in Thailand. For those not interested in watches, most Rolex models are indistinguishable.

Remember a time before you gave a rats about watches?

Did you ever recognize anyones watches? I didn't. As said by a couple people up there ^ unless someone knows about watches and/or the GMT, not many people are going to ask you about it.

I have an older Seiko, automatic, day-date, diver's watch that at first glance looks a lot like a Pepsi. Over the years I've had a few comments about it, including one or two asking if it was a Rolex. Of course, once you actually look at it you will see all the differences.

Definitely recognisable.. esp the GMT IIc

- firstly you noticed the PCL.. so.. either a Daytona or a GMTII
- then you look for the 3 sub dials.. but instead see the Black bezel.. bingo.. GMTIIc

Otherwise.. (pre-PCL) its the classic split coke/pepsi bezel..

For a non-WIS guy even the difference about PCL vs BCL is not significant or noticable. And a WIS would recognize a GMT from a mile away

I had an AD confuse my Black Dial GMT II for a Sub... go figure

Not too many people notice a Rolex unless they either own a Rolex or are a fan of Rolexes

It may be just me, but if any non-WIS people recognize a Rolex, I'd imagine it would be a DJ style with Jubilee, and most likely TT.

Before my eyes opened to the world of Rolex, I wouldn't have known that a Pepsi was a Rolex at a glance or from a distance.

I think it's fair to say that whilst everyone has heard of the universal brand name 'Rolex', few people, who are not into watches, would recognise one, even at close range.

None of mine hardly ever get noticed; even the DD, surprisingly.

The only time my GMT IIc has ever been noticed was the time I was asked if it was a Sub...oh well, I guess to those who don't know they look an awful lot alike.

I don't even associate the PCL with Rolex. I don't know what else it is, but I can spot them a mile away.

For a non-wis perspective, it's tough to decipher a GMTII from any of the Rolex sports models (unless its a Coke or Pepsi which stands-out), since they have cosmetic similarities.
.....and that's why we differ from the rest of the crowd!
