There are different Submariner references depending on the era.

Rolex only uses ceramic for the bezel insert . The current SUB has not got the ceramic insert unlike the TT and gold models. Rolex just unveiled the new SS SUB which will have the ceramic bezel insert . ( Not expected in the shops till much later this year )
P.S:For more info on ceramic watches such like RADO , just PM J.J. he will only be glad to fill you in on that .

Basically the 16610 Sub has not changed since 1988 a few small changes like solid end link bracelet and a few minor fonts. The new slightly modded sub introduced at Basel this year has a slightly different case, slightly larger hour dial markers and a different bracelet clasp .Plus it has a ceramic bezel insert the movement is the same Cal 3135 thats been used since 1988, but now will soon included the in-house escapement parts.

For me the 1680 has always been the one. Whether RED or WHITE it's such a great reference with a unique look.
