Submariner - The Change
So it's all change for the submariner. This is happening at a bad time for me as I am just getting to the top of my dealers waiting list and I thought I had done the decision making. I have told him that I want the older model (16610) as I found the GMT Master a bit bulky, and I think the new sub is the same case - is it? Am I missing out on a better new movement? Is the new clasp much better? Does my bezel need to be ceramic? Should I stick with the last of the icons or am I being an old git and I should change my mind and move with the times? Will my dealer still get delivery of a 16610? I have just joined this forum and I would value your thoughts _ thank you gentlemen.

Bob, do yourself a favor and use the search button.
Search Basel and also search Ceramic Submariner To answer some of your questions: The new Ceramic Sub has a new super case which is bigger than the old case. Same movement but with a new spring The clasp is newer and better. It's a glidelock clasp. The bezel has to be ceramic. I'd get the newer sub...unless you like older styling. The new sub will be a huge hit. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

I would get the older Sub/LV and see if you can get a black bezel for it. The ceramic bezel is just a ploy to update with a nip and tuck improvement. Its just Rolex putting on a more blingy bezel, and far more expensive to boot. I think the old one looks better too.

Sounds like you don't care for the new, larger case. The old subs should still be available new for a while....but get what you like. You will know what time it is - regardless of choice! A matter of style is all it is

Hi - the new Sub has a larger 'super' case, similar to the GMT Master IIc but with noticeably wider lugs.
As Bill sagely notes, if you prefer the old style Sub it will be around for a little while yet Cheers

The thing that i like the most about the new Sub is the new glidelock clasp

The new sub will be bulkier than the current 16610. I went with the present sub 16610 for that reason only, as the new maxi-case does not wear well for me

You have an interesting problem.
If you have to go on a different list for one of the new Subs, then you might be looking at a couple more years of waiting.. You are also looking at considerably more money for the newer version; that could be an issue for some.. If you don't like the GMT IIc on the wrist though, you won't like the Sub either - it will be thicker and so it will sit a little higher on the wrist.. Personally............. the new one will be around for another decade or two..the 16610 isn't going to be made any more; I might opt for the 16610 if they call my number, after all, it is the one you have been waiting for...........

There you go, Bob. What do you think so far about these responses. Myself, I'm waiting for the new SUB-C.

This guy is on a waiting list for a Submariner, a watch that you can find anywhere in the US, with a discount. If there is a separate list for the new one, it may be very long already. The UK is a strange place. I also belong to a UK based watch forum. It is not uncommon for some well heeled folks in the UK to fly to the US over the weekend to pick up a "rare" SS sports model.

You might want to look at some "alternative" dealers. I believe you could get it faster at a better deal, on the "old" style that is.

I had the same concerns as you do and ended up getting the 16610. I love the look of the new GMT with the ceramic bezel and maxicase but it just doesn't wear well for me so I knew the new Sub wasn't the watch for me.
Go for what you like and what you feel comfortable with. When you purchase your first Rolex there should be no regrets or hesitations at the time of purchase. I walked out of the dealer with a big smile on my face and I still have the same feeling every time I look at my watch. |

Remember all we can do is give you opinions but the decision lies with you. You need to decide on which one you want and then buy it and enjoy it.....Happy hunting!!!

I bought the 16610 a couple of months ago and am enjoying it now! I personally wouldn't wait for the newer model if you already know you like the 16610. Good luck in making your final decision.

Thank you very much for your advice - all of it good. In the end the old style wins for me, and I don't think the new has significant technical improvements. As Tools said "it is the one you have been waiting for". I'll just wait for the phone to ring!
Thanks again. |
