TOKYO Inbound...

My mother in law is meeting us in Maui in a couple weeks. I'm thinking about asking her to pick me up a Seiko Orange Monster in Tokyo city, anyone have any other suggestions. I will pay her back, so something watch related. They gave me a really cool Gshock when I was in Tokyo 4 years ago.

See if you can find a Monster other than Orange...they are much harder to get...That would be cool. You can easily get a black or orange in the US.

Orange is cool though...

My friend Bill said white dial watches are not as popular in Japan so you might be able to get them cheaper there.

Very true.

I have never seen a white dial Daytona or Explorer II on anybody's wrist here. Lots of black dials though. In fact I have never seen a white dial Explorer II in an AD here or grey dealer (other thana vintage cream.) The black Daytonas outnumber the white for sale here maybe 4 to 1.

If you liked the GShock they gave you last time, there are other Gshocks which aren't sold in the US Market. Look at the international G-shock page and see if there is something you like.

Monster is easily available in US.
If I was you I'll have MIL to pick me up Japan domestic only model.
Good choice would be "SUMO" (Prospex SBDC00x) -JMHO.

The Orange Monster skx781 is not a JDM and can be bought anywhere. Amazon, eBay, etc... chronoshark or some of those deal a day places sometimes have them for 149 on bracelet.

If you are getting something from Japan, should try for a JDM Sumo, Tuna Can, etc...

I like the Seiko Solar Atomic World Timers: SBFT009, SBFT003, SBFT007. They are neat watches. I just picked up the SBFT009 and am very pleased. All my watches are mechanicals so this was something a bit different.

Tom, I don't think it has anything to do with their (Japanese) non-preference for white dial watch.
At one time "white auto" was very popular in Japan (virtually everyone drove white auto).
They are crazy about "White Day" too.

i agree with the suggestion that u shud try some JDM or rare models...also look at new Seiko 5 sports 'military' models...
I think its the SNZ series...the Japan models say 'made in Japan' on the dial
i think...happy hunting.

I would do what others have suggested.....get a JDM Seiko or Citizen.......Seiko Sumo is around $500 and has the 6R15 mvt which means hacking and manual wind.Like Monster it punches way,way above its price tag.The lugs are curved,so it does not look so big on the wrist and the case wraps the bezel at the sides to give it some protection.....a really cool and distinctive design.

Available in black SBDC001...blue SBDC003, or orange SBDC005.The blue is interesting in that the shade seems to vary depending on the lighting.....sometimes almost looking black.

In China the color/colour white is often associated with mourning/bereavement.
