Enlighten me to Panerai

Hi all, it's ajust about a month ago I joined this forum, mainly to know and learn about Rolex. I like swiss watches for a long time, but just recently love Rolex and bought 2 (GMT iic and sub LV) in April for myself.

Having read some of the threads in the Panerai section, I saw a lot of people here flipped their Rolex to PAM. There must be something special about this watch/brand that make you guys did that for sure.

Today, I read some threads and found 104 or 111 or 177 or 312 is actually impressive... however, you Paneristi, could you open my mind a little bit more about PAMs ?

Thanks ... i hope Panerai bug don't bite me yet... just had 2 Rolexes last month and definitely need to save some..... but no doubt this forum is creating an addiction to watches.....

Welcome to the 'darkside' Andrew. You may be interested to know that Rolex and Panerai have some shared history. When Panerai first started, Rolex supplied some cases and movements. Many collectors see the two brands as being natural partners in a collection.

Sounds like the Panerai bug may already be nibbling... and then of course there is the strap addiction to look forward to...

Cheers

LOL.... hope the bug dont bite me soon.... I'll be crazy to spend more money on watches ... :) but it's interesting to know there's a lot of people into PAM now and leaving rolex behind. Yes, I 've heard rolex made the movement around 1930 ish for PAM.

Andrew....I think that a PAM or two in your collection compliments rolex very well..if you like the look of them then you're already getting the cash out....it's just a matter of which model..I have the 104. Love it. I would have a good look at the 312 personally....then there's the 111 ..and...list is endless! You will never regret it.. I have bought and flipped a few rolex...for other rolex...but the PAM is a keeper for sure.

For me, there was always nothing but Rolex. But the moment I saw my first Panerai, I was completely smitten. There are so many beautiful watches out there from many different makers, but, Panerai really, really grabs me.

I think the PAM watches are possibly very nice, its just i cant see the appeal of them. On saying that, the PAM 00297 GMT is interesting.

I tend to view Rolex and Panerai as distant cousins. Both brands in a large sense have stayed true to there DNA (as least as far as sports models go--well, perhaps Panerai has held the line a bit better)

Both are distinctive in style and look, and both have proven to be rock solid tough as nails watches with a military heritage.

I've never been one to baby my watches (likewise I don't abuse them either) and have found Panerai to be in many ways as competent as Rolex when the surroundings are less than ideal. Couple that with a big easy to read dial with great luminosity and you have a watch fully capable to be at home in any situtation.

A point worth mentioning as well is that the raw numbers of Panerai don't add up to a drop in the bucket of the Rolex juggernaught...something that appeals to many.

Some may argue the whole in-house movement thing (something Panerai is taking care of), but again my experience has been Pams choice of movements reflects their idea of a strong solid watch built for the abnormal.

My Pams are fully as accurate as my Rolex and maintain that accuracy and consistency as well as any Rolex I own (ok my RED 1680 is just stupid accurate thanks to my watchmaker.)

Some argue the size, but in all honesty you gotta try it to believe it.
