When I come home from work, I always take my Rolex SD off my wrist and place it on a soft polishing cloth.

I recall reading somewhere on this forum that when a Rolex is not in use, the watch should be placed on a soft cloth face down on the cloth.

The reason for this is that this is the best position for the watch when not wearing it so as to allow the lube in the gears to recycle itself throughout the watch as the watch was worn face up all day, as well as the watch tends not to lose time in this position.

Is this true?

Well first in different resting position would not affect the lube in the gears to recycle itself throughout the watch as you put.Now the amount of oil thats needed to lubricate a watch you could fit on a few pin heads its a very very small amount.Different resting positions like you say might gain or loose a few seconds.Now if you dont wear your watch or if you are going to store it.Then just a few winds once a month will keep the oil around the moving parts.

Then what's the optimum resting point for a Rolex so as not to lose/gain time?

Don't think there is one. Crown UP will make the watch gain; crown DOWN will make it lose; dial UP will also make it gain.

You have to carry out a few experiments of your own with your watch and see how it behaves.

Different watches will exhibit different plus or minus characteristics. Both my Rollies (Sub-dates) gain when placed dial UP or crown UP....and lose time when placed crown DOWN.

Just clean it when you think its nessesary,use just small amount of plain old mild soap,and tap water.

I always do the same. It just seems more obvious to me to lay a watch flat as opposed to laying it on its side. Also, based on the Rolex instructions the watch will lose time lying on its side crown up or down. Also, in the March issue of Mens Journal Magazine, there is an article on the worlds finest watches, which by the way shows the all-gold GMT Master II.They recommend wiping off your watch every night with a microfiber cloth to remove perspiration, skin fragments, etc. They also recommend storing the watch in a sealed container even tupperware if thats all you have.

Tupperwear? Jeez, these babies are already hermetically sealed. I guess they wantth watch totally deprived of dust and particulates. But that frankly seems wierd to me especially with a tool watch that you can play tennis in and exercise in and swim with...etc. I pretty much expose my watches to the elements, and then set them in the Rolex box, sometimes crown up, sometimes down.

Now thats a good idea a small Tupperware watch protector to protect your Rolex watch.Perhaps designed to wear on the wrist to keep the Rolex watch away from the harmful dust scratches and god forbid the wet stuff water.But myself have always thought that a Rolex was one of the toughest watches on this planet.And was meant to be used and worn.Then when a service was due after around 5 years wearing.Those kind people at Rolex would polish and return it to you to you as good as the day it was first bought.Then to go on and most probably last you a life time and beyond.A Rolex is for wearing and not for hiding in boxes, or any over pampering.

Speaking of beyond my fertile mind was just envisioning a scenario where this guy dies, his son says "my dad loved that watch leave it on him". Several days later he reconsiders, they exhume the body and the watch is still running perfectly. Just as they get ready to remove the watch, a booming voice from on high says, "Hey, I wanted that Blue Sub, It's just like JJs!.

So, Mikey, what you're telling us is to clean your Datejusts, you toss them into a box of gravel and agitate and dry them with a fresh sheet of heavy grit sandpaper, and when your pieces need a deep clean, they go into a container of gasoline heated to near boiling with a blowtorch?
