Living with a Rolex DSSD - Keep or not to keep? - that is the question
[FONT="Arial Black"]I have owned the DSSD since Jan 1st 2010. It was my dream watch and having fallen of my racer in the ice (how silly!) I had damaged the bracelet on my girlie Omega Seamaster. I went to my AD to get the bracelet fixed and low and behold they had a DSSD in the window. So I brought it straight away while I was wrapped up in a whirl wind of passion! It was the first time I had seen the watch in the flesh, and I loved it!
I have now owned it for 5 months and unlike some people who seem to own watches and have them BNIB I wear mine EVERY day. So I have lived with this watch. It is heavy, it will not go under the cuff of a shirt and the size / weight and depth means that it can move around easily on the wrist. I find myself using the supurb glidelock clasp on a continuous basis - almost as if Rolex knew you would need this part to live with the watch??? hmmm... So... I consider trading it in and getting something that I would love with all my heart. I am not a rich man but I do like the finer things in life. It is due to the ending (as opposed to never ending) pot of cash that I find myself with this decision to make on a regular basis. A friend who has collected watches for years told me that if there is doubt, there is no doubt - but I find that gate swinging two ways - I want something I love more, but don't know what. I also doubt the fact that I want to sell it! - once it is gone will I miss it like hell!!!? - Then I LOVE it again! God - this is a proper head ache! Due to the way it sits on my wrist I find that when I look down at it it is sat futher away from me and I am looking at strap - I think this is due to my genetics though! I need a DSSD Wrist - does anyone know where to get one! So is there anyone else out there who feels like this but simply can't bare to part with the deepest of the deep? PS - I suspect I would go Panerai Luminor Marina on a leather strap - any comparisons or thoughts are most welcome... Al Cappuccino - Oxford - the city of dreaming spires. |

I was in a similar boat - liked the DSSD but did not love it. I have an SD that I wore more often and for some reason just liked it a lot more. Anyway... there are endless posts on pros/cons of the DSSD so I won't repeat those here. It's a great watch but it's not perfect for everyone.
Since I had an SD, I wanted something different. I did a trade for a Panerai 312K and am very happy. For me it just provides a completely different look and I like the uniqueness of it. I, for one, am happy I did the trade. However, and this is probably the WIS in me, I can easily see myself getting the DSSD again in the future. But not for a long time. Good luck!

For the last 20+ years I have owned at least one type of sports/dive Rolex. I started collecting Panerai a few years ago due to the trends and "coolness" of the design. I came to the realization that the classic timeless design of the Rolex sub line was more appealing to my lifestyle. I felt Panerai was a bit too fashion forward & trendy for my liking. I traded/sold my pam's to get back to my roots, Rolex. Had a Pam 243, 104, and 183, and never looked back since. Don't get me wrong, Panerai makes a fine watch, though I was drawn back to the brand and style I never truly could dismiss, the Rolex Submariner / Sea Dweller.
To me, this is the joy in collecting watches. There is always passion, individuality, style, heritage, and practicality involved in the decision process in choosing a watch. P.S. Love my DSSD and understand your dilemma, I favor my 14060 on a NATO/Zulu for everyday comfort. Cheers! Jim |

In terms of appearance, I think DSSDs are way too bulky for most of their owner's wrists. Why not stick it in a drawer for a month and see if you miss it? |

When it comes to owning watches or anything it's all about choices. I do not think there is one right way or one wrong way only what you want and what is needed. As long as your needs(food, clothing and shelter) are taken care of you are free to dream and go after what you want. Just don't be impulsive(that can get expensive) and think through any decisions before you make them!!!

If you get a PAM, you're gonna have the same problems with cuffs.

I understand your concern with the DSSD. I have a 7.5' wrist and the DS is still large on my wrist. I don't wear it everyday. I prefer my YM or Explorer II for everyday use. Having said that, I wouldn't part with my DS unless economic reasons forced me to. As another poster suggested, put it in the safe for a month. If you hear it calling you then you have your answer...

I suggest you keep the deepsea. Maybe you don't have the bracelet adjusted right. My 7inch wrist had two links taken out of the 6 o'clock position. And I have 6 links in the 12 o'clock position. Which is 6 links in 12 o'clock and 4 links in 6 o'clock. Plus I kept the diving extensions installed. It is very comfortable for me, what is your wrist size?

Try moving the links around. I found that the DSSD fit better after I removed the diving extension.

One option might be to change bracelets, ie. fit a rubber/NATO strap on your Deepsea.

To the OP: Personally, I prefer the lighter Rolex watches. I'm more comfortable with them.
Of my 4 Rolexes, the TT GMT-IIC is the heaviest and I use it only for the weekends. The SS Sub-date and Exp-II are very comfortable for everyday wear...........and even Platty is not bad. JJ

Keep it. Wait for a year when the flurry of enthusiasm for the Sub C has died down. Then sell the Deepsea and buy a Sub C. You will have all the things you love about the Deepsea (ceramic, glidelock) without the height off of the wrist and weight.
I really like my Deepsea, but it has only been a week. For now it is "bad ass". I assume you removed the diver extension the day you brought the watch home.

I haven't found this at all...but I did remove the dive extension...and that makes a huge difference

Thanks for the input everyone*******************
Lots of intersting points - Don't think I could do without it for a month! Hence my doubt comments.
As for my wrist size I am not a small lad and still have all the extension installed in the bracelet. I did have one link removed and I am wondering if this could be why the watch sits away from me. I am going to speak to my AD to see what they think/ I am sure they will shuffle some links for me. I'll keep you all updated. I think I'm going to keep it, wait until it is all paid off and then get something else. The Panerai's have a great look that I love and I also saw a nice Chopard "1000 Miglia GT XL Chrono" which will undoubtably battle in the waste grounds of my soul with the Luminor Marina. Don't know , I do not think I will ever let go of my SDDS . I got so used to it that I now wear it to the office . I wear that often that my wife keep remarking why I have to have 4 other Rolex watches as I never seem to wear them compared to the SDDS . I hope you will not regret it !

I tried on the DSSD, and even though I have a fairly large wrist at over 7 1/2",
I ended up going for a BNIB Sea Dweller instead. I could live with the 43-44mm case a lot easier than I could live with the 18mm height. I bought my SD from a professional saturation diver, and he said his cohorts in the profession had bought a fair number of DSSDs when they first came out, but now regret the purchase since they are just too large to wear on a day-to-day basis. I can highly recommend the SD, it has pushed everything else off my wrist for months now.
