Incoming Osprey

I recently caught this female Osprey as she was landing on a nearby perch. I feel for any fish that is on the receiving end of those talons.

Rafael, Allan, Fernando thanks for your comments!

They are excellent hunters and eat fish almost exclusively. They are so good at it that many times eagles will just watch them until they catch a fish and then chase them trying to steal it from them.

They are somewhat unique in the way that they fish and will hover over the water sometimes up to 200 feet and then dive talons first in the water. I've watched them come with 2 fish and I've seen pictures of them coming up with 3 in one dive. I'm still working on a full on dive shot but here is one when they are hovering.

Absolutely stunning!!!
Can't imagine the equipment involved in getting a sharp, high-speed shot like that... not to mention the talent.

Great pic Mike Last week a red-tailed hawk perched on my deck railing as I was putting chicken on the grill. He was so close I could have touched him. Absolutely beautiful

Thanks very much for all the kind comments everyone.

Dan, they have had a few problems with that Osprey but it's still a heck of feat of engineering and I would say the name is fitting. Nice shot.

Boyd, I'm always on the look out for Red-tailed hawks but have trouble getting close to them. Maybe I need to try the chicken on the grill method. Can I borrow your recipe. That must have been pretty cool to have it that close.

Thank you all. Most of them are heading south or getting ready to so I'll be concentrating on eagles for a while.
