Hello all, I am very new to the "Fountain Pen" scene so I purchased myself a couple Lamy pens to start... I picked up a Safari in flat black with a med nib (black ink) and a AL-star with a med nib (blue ink) as well. The dealer said the med nib is the most popular, is that correct? As I am definately a newbie, I have no idea! I really like the pens so I guess thats what matters the most. I also have a Mont Blanc rollerball that has just about been through the ringer... Hope to be posting pics soon!

Hey Nick.

Fountain pens these days regularly come in the stunning and wide range of styles, all that way from Fine to Medium to Broad. Unfortunately, most pen-sellers seem to reckon that people only want 'Medium' nibs.

Mediums are not necessarily the most POPULAR (although pen-sellers would love you to think that), they're just the ones that are "default". You can get Extra-Fine, Fine, Double-Broad and so-on...you just have to bully the seller into getting you one...or in some cases...even convincing them that they exist! Believe it or not, back in the old days, the majority of fountain pens were sold with FINE nibs instead of medium.

That's all I have to say on that particular subject. But feel free to ask whatever questions you might have regarding fountain pens and we'll be glad to help.

Nick, good for you as I know you will really enjoy the way ink flows from a fountain pen over a ball point or roller ball pen. Nib size is an individual preference and choice!!!

There is no better FP in its price range than the Lamy!

I would suggest that you try the 1.1 italic. The Lamys can easily have a nib changed for about 10 dollars. I think you will find that the italic creates lovely line variations and is very smooth.
