Milgauss Vs GMT IIc
Hello folks,
First post here - so a BIG hello to everyone, and thanks for all the knowledge and information (and fun!) that keeps flowing through here.... I am looking at purchasing my first Rolex, and after some delibaration (which included leanings towards DSSD - but I already have an Omega PO XL...DSSD will have to wait another day/year) have narrowed it down to these exact two: GMT IIc Milgauss Some input requested from folks here: 1). Heft - for those who have/had owned/tried both, which one has more heft to it? I like to be able to "tell/feel" a watch on my wrist, so which one is/feels heftier that way? 2). Balance - of course it varies by shape and size of every individuals wrist, but what has been your experience, does either 'sit' better than the other on your wrist? 3). Size perception - does the Milgauss 'feel' bigger than the 40mm it is given minimal bezel? 4). Bracelet - what do you think are pros/cons of each? Does the quick expansion on Milgauss bracelet really practically help out? I have tried both at two different ADs (not at the same time though...) and will again next week or so, but the 15-20 minutes you get to spend with a watch in the store, while useful, doesn't really match up to an owner's opinion.....so please chime in and help out! Thanks in advance! Looking forward to my time here |

I have owned that Mil and have tried the GMT2c a few times. I would go with the GMT.

Welcome to TRF! If you want "heft", go with the GMT. But, Milgauss GV is best for unique!

For me, it's GMT all the way: I need a date and I dislike the "lightning bolt" second hand on the Milgauss. The GMT will have more heft and presence as well.

The Milgauss is heftier than the GMT
By all accounts the Milgauss is several grams heavier than an SS GMT.
I take it with the Milgauss in the running that the date and GMT function are unimportant. If so, I'd get the Milgauss. It isn't as covered in writing and the second hand is very cool. |

I'm sorry but the milgauss apparently weighs around 150-155 grams or so I thought......this is the same weight as the gmt2c. I may be wrong.

If you're planning to get the Deepsea in a year's time and you already have an Omega PO 45mm (with black bezel?) then do you really want another watch with a black rotatable bezel?

IMO - GMTIIC would be a perfect first Rolex. The Milgauss can be the perfect 2nd Rolex.
I would have think that the Milgauss would wear abit taller due to the extra case back. Only owned a SS GMTIIC for a week and havent really compared both (yet) I thought both has the Easylink bracelet?!? |

I have both.
Re heft I would say that they are very similar. I think you would be happy with both in that respect. They do wear differently as the GMT is 'flatter' vs the 'higher' MG. The MG is more sculptured and IMO fits better on the wrist. I don't see one as neccessarily being better, just different. Personally I find the MG to be marginally more comfortable. The MG does wear bigger than some 40mm watches, as the dial is that bit clearer/bigger. They are both 40mm watches and that is reflective in day to day use - the 'older' style 40mm Rolex sports at 40mm do feel smaller. The fliplock may have some security advantage, but I've had no issue on any M or DJ with the current clasp. The MG bracelet IMO is more comfortable and looks nicer simply as a result of a more integrated clasp. They both have the easy-link, which does have occasional uses. I don't think you can go wrong with either watch. The GMT has the additional date and GMT 'complications', and has quite a busy look to it and those chunky numbers, whereas the MG is a masterclass of simplicity. The matt dial and orange highlights add a lift, and the lack of cyclops also adds to it's simplicity. The second hand on the MG was a reservation for me intially, but I actually quite like it now, and it's not that noticeable in day to day use. If this was to be your one and only Rolex, then the GMT would be my suggestion, but you have mentioned that you are likely to get a further one in due course, so for now I would go with either your whim, or whoever does you the best deal - on the basis thhat you would be happy to have either. I'm also going to send you a PM ............. |

I've worn both. I say that the Milly is a nice watch but the GMT has it all over the Milgauss...nicer case, better clasp, a date function and a bigger audience should you decide to sell it.

If it's your first than it has to be the GMT IIC. I love the black dial (non-GV) Milgauss, and it really sings on the wrist, but like others have said I would consider it a second or third choice.
Good luck Cheers

I believe the Milgauss is 157gms and the II-c is 146gms.
On the wrist the Milgauss definitely feels more substantial, but as a first watch the II-c would be tough to beat. I wonder why the comparison isn't between the II-c and the GV. Price-wise, it would be a lot closer, and the decision would be a lot tougher.

Thanks a TON for all that good info, your PM helped me research a lot....thank you! Well, the GV is VERY nice, but there is something about that flat-black no-numbers dial with a 'clear' crystal that 'tugged' at me more than the GV...but I know what you are saying.....that GV is fine fine fine |

GMT IIc for your first... then later the GV. As others have said, this place is a BAD influence and you "WILL" get more than one.. hehehe. Welcome to TRF and we all look foward to the pics of your first purchase (whatever it should be)...
