The Malls are dying

And I really dont care but it is a good economic barometer....
my brother went to the famous Houston Galleria the past week-end and said it looks real run down compaired to the last time he was in it 20 years ago and even has a payless shoes....20 years back I dont think they would have let that kind of store in any upscale shopping mall....today its the norm....welcome to the new economy...whats next Rolex off the rack style stores in the Mills malls.

Yes, the Galleria has definitely changed, and not for the better.

There are still some high-end stores there, but most are not.

The only reason I ever go there any more is they have a nice pen store and Nordstrom's is right behind it.

In San Diego the major malls are still looking real good.

Plaza Bonita in National City still looks like a dump before this depression and it will not change.

We have a newer mall at the Mexico border crossing and I a really taken back how good it still looks when you see the surrounding area you would think it would have been destroyed by now.

I do see a lot of empty homes and business in San Diego county when I am driving, now that is bad.

Urban planners have known for a long time that traditional malls are dead.

The new model is the "town center" model that has outdoor streets, a location where small events can be held, etc...

In some cases, old malls are being turned "inside out", exposing the storefronts to the exterior in order to mimick this kind of atmosphere.

I have seen just that in the 'burbs where I live. That's exactly what they've done here and it is thriving.

I went there in 1991 and it looked pretty nice with lots of high end stores etc...when I was there in 2008 it was showing its age....I think it 40+years old
I only went in once we we lived in Houston....malls are not my thing and to me avoided at all cost IMHO....my wife thinks they are the greatest thing in the world though and spends hours in Scottsdale Fashion Plaza and my check book suffers.....Between SFP and Houston Galleria I would choose Scottsdale....not that Im a mall expert though.

Galleria III has been pretty much a ghost town since Sharper Image is gone and Nordstrom's opened up... (not that it was ever really crowded!)

It has flea-market type stores in it now.

Admittedly, I do spend a lot of time there....and there are certainly some stores that IMO shouldn't be tenants there, but what can you do? I'm actually amazed that some of those tenants can afford the rent there. It's not cheap!

Yes, the same thing is happening to my local mall (in Manchester, CT).

It's FAR from run down (they did a MAJOR re-model of the entire mall like 4-5 years ago, including "upscaling the image", putting in more high class restaurants, shops, etc.).

Needless to say, that didn't work out too well. Half of those restaurants ended up closing due to (can anyone guess . . . lol) lack of business.
Back when I was in high school (8 years ago or so now) that mall was BOOMING EVRY night, especially on the weekends. Now, the place is dead on most nights, and the week-ends it's doing mediocre business.
Usually during Christmas, the overflow parking is full, and people have to park across the street to get to the mall. For the past three years or so, the overflow parking lot hasn't even been used once during Christmas.

Just a change in both the times, and most importantly, the economy.

Totally agree. And the stuff they are selling can't possibly pay it... I bet they get a break while the owner waits for potential better times... if there are a lot of empty spots, I'd think it's worse for the mall.

I could not agree more. The help (three of them) were fawning over some apparently rich guy and his escort (perhaps 1/3 his age).

I could not get the time of day from them.

When I was in Houston I went to Willowbrook mall which was close to our house and The BB there was going to give me 10 percent off a GMT which was unheard of at the time....should call the guy back (still have his card) and see if he would do 15/20 now that the economy is worse than in 2008....plus no tax now that im back home in AZ
I thought is was strange in Houston everybody asked what mall are you close to .....or go to?

Actually BBB wasn't a Rolex AD. They had a bunch of other brands though....Cartier, Breitling, Omega, Tag Heuer, etc.

I also like the town center idea, but geez, half the reason that folks go to the mall here is to escape the heat!
