Things you've heard from non Rolex experts thats just BS

After reading the post by sj1523 about the sales staff at a Macy's store commenting on his Millgauss saying, that she was pretty sure that Rolex doesn't make watches with orange bolts, I was wondering what all you've heard from people who claim to know about Rolex watches that makes you wonder where they got their knowledge from

I'll start : My friend trying to prove that my Sub was fake, confidently said, "There is no engraving on the case back - its obviously fake!"

talking to a saleswoman at a jewelry store, she said to me, "everyone knows Rolex NEVER made a watch with a battery!"

Ive heard quite a few, but my favorite is what happened to a friend a few years back. My buddy was in his early twenties as he was waiting to cross the street. An older gentleman wearing a brand new 16610 looked at the 1680 red on his wrist. Seeing that it was related to his new Rolex, the older man sneered at my friend "Nice Rolex, maybe someday you'll be able to afford a new one."

I was at a party, a guy (OK, an idiot) who knew everything about everything started talking watches. He said the reason he didn't own a Rolex was because you.... HAD TO WIND THEM .... "Oh Really?" I asked, "Doesn't Rolex make self-winding, automatic movements?" "Oh no" He replied, "that's part of the Rolex tradition, every watch they make is a manual wind"

I was wearing a suit at the time and he couldn't see my Daytona, I was going to show it to him and point out his stupidity.... but then figured it wasn't worth my breath.

From an accountant who was a Breitling guy

"I don't like Rolex because they don't make chronographs"

I said "no, they make chronometers."

He didn't get it

A few yrs ago there used to be a really effeminate guy working at my AD, in conversation he said that his Daytona was a great watch, powered by pixie-dust

I stopped into a a Ben Bridge in Houston last week (I just wanted to see a new sub) and the sales woman told me there would be none on the continent until October. She said she knew this for a fact and I told her about the ones that had already shown up. Seems as though it burst her bubble.

I only hear stupid/untruths about Rolex from sales reps, especially if you are in a 2nd hand store

From a very loud "expert" about watches: "I've got a Rolex for my graduation, it's an Oyster Prince" -- of course, it turned out to be a Tudor. And I'm not even sure if it was authentic...

One of my co-workers insisted that my 14060M was a fake because real Submariners have "that little date bubble." That's how you can spot a fake.

Was in a pub and a gent commented on how nice my watch looked (sd) "Must have cost a few grand that" he said, instantly recognising a Rolex...... Then his stupid wife chimed in at 600 db and said "IT'LL BE A FAKE...NO ONE SPENDS THAT MUCH ON A WATCH!" ......

I laughed..... they left.... (he did apologize on behalf of his other half and buy me a pint first)

Could you elaborate on what part of your story is BS?

AFAIK Rolex makes Tudor watches, but it doesn't mean Tudor equals Rolex. You cannot take a Tudor watch and claim it is a Rolex watch.

Just like if you have a Skoda, you cannot claim it's a VW. Even though VW Group makes both Skoda and VW cars.

Never gets old lol

I was in an AD that sold everything but Rolex including some high end brands, and the salesman spotted my GMT IIC. He called over another salesman and they both chimed in "nice watch but everyone knows that Rolex movements are not reliable. "I asked them what they meant and they both came up with the answer that they often break down and they're very inaccurate. I asked them if that's why they're not a Rolex AD and they said yes. They didn't need the aggravation of having to constantly send back watches under warranty.

I have a friend who has been in the luxury watch sales business for 35 years.

He estimates in that time he has sold at least 10,000 Rolexes. He said that he has never had one come back to the store defective. He sold one high-end brand for a year, 50 of them went out the door, 50 came back defective.

From the owner of my local Rolex AD ... "uhh, there's no such thing as a Y serial anniversary Submariner. I just looked on the computer, and the earliest one we sold was an F serial."

Same AD, same day - "uhh, the Sea Dweller was discontinued with the M serial." For the newbs, there are some V serials around.

Same AD - "I'm sorry, but we have to send your watch in to adjust the bracelet. We don't have a watchmaker on staff."

I could go on, but ... why???

A local AD adamantly stated that there has never been any correlation between serial numbers and production dates and that anyone who said otherwise was greatly misled. I just quietly said "thank you for the information" and eased on out.
