Almost stuck my foot in my big mouth

I saw a watch with a cyclops on someones wrist just yesterday. I comented that that was a nice watch. The owner said oh no this is a knock off. He took it off and handed it to me and I noticed when he gave it to me that it was a metalic looking DD that felt pretty light in weight. Then I could tell it had to be a knock off.

He went on to say how he had this for years and it was batttery operated and kept perfect time, something we both agreed a Rolex would be a little off.

He then said he had actually purchased a real Rolex in the 50's but gave it to a cabby because he ladked funds for a cab ride. I said if he had only kept that watch how much it would be worth now.

He further said how his wife had offered to get him a real one not to long back but when they found out how much it would cost for a watch that was just too much.

He then noticed my watch a real TT DJII. He said that is a nice watch what type of watch is that and I said oh that is a knock off too.

I really did not intend any harm when I noticeed what he was wearing, and I gues I am an amature because I couldn;t tell his was fake until he said so and handed it to my. But biy did I start feeling bad when he started telling me about it.

I guess I might want to watch that in the future. I really was just trying to be polite when I said that is a nice watch.

I would have done the same thing. I wouldn't want him to feel bad, and If I were to tell him mine was real in my mind I would be flaunting the fact that I have one and he doesn't. You're just a nice guy.

Another professional in my field who could afford a real Rolex showed me his "Yachtmaster" which he told me up front was fake.

Since I knew it was fake, I didn't hyperanalyze it, but it had a sweeping second hand (auto movement) and I thought it looked very much like a real Rolex watch. If I wasn't told in advance, I'm not sure I would have figured it.

I would not buy a fake. It is an insult to the intellectual property of the true manufacturer. But there sure are a lot of fake Rolexes out there--probably more than real ones.

I bet some people think that they have a real one and it's fake.

I'm not sure I agree with lying to him.
The inference is that he has a knockoff because he can't afford the real thing.

Some people can afford it but just don't want to spent that much on a watch. All they care about is their watch looks OK, keeps time and doesn't cost a bundle.

I appreciate your sensitivity but I would have told him the truth - explaining your love for the Rolex history and craftsmanship.

Anyways... no big deal.

You know if I couldn't afford a Rolex I wouldn't buy a "knock-off" but rather just a cheaper watch. I'd rather have a 'real' cheaper Seiko or Casio then a fake Rolex.

Anyway, yes it sounds like an awkward moment but no need to lie about your own watch. Nothing wrong with wearing a real Rolex - but plenty wrong with wearing a fake one IMHO.

I can't blame you Dan. I probably would have done the same thing in that scenario.

In fact it may have been a bit forward for me to bring it up. What buisiness is it of mine asking or comenting on somebody elses watch. However I think we all do that from time to time on various things someone may have. Especially when you see something you think looks nice or have always thought you might want to own.

I recieved a comment about my shirt the other day, someone said thats a nice shirt. I enjoyed recieving the compliment.

So I didn't mean any harm, but I guess opinions will vary as to how maybe I should have handled this. I thought at the time I at least tried to do what I believed was the right thing.

As I said before, I believe you did the best you could with the situation you were in.

Couldn't agree more Mark. First, you were nice Dan, and handled it definitely better then I would have, but good on ya for not making the guy feel bad.

I COMPLETELY agree with Mark. There are some phenominal watches out there for not a lot of money. Seiko for example, is an outstanding brand and a really nice one can be had for a few hundred dollars. Even less-expensive Casios are great watches.

Point is, the lack of funds is NOT an excuse for buying a FAKE! I will NEVER chastize someone because they are not in a position to spend a lot of money on a watch. I have a lot more respect for someone that proudly spends very little money on a less-expensive watch, then spending the same amount on a FAKE.
