Green/Black SUB (noob question)
hi,
first post, please be gentle. i have a big birthday coming up and have been asked what watch i'd like. so many to choose from (probably the reason why i don't have a proper watch). anyway, i really like the submariner with the green bezel and black dial but can't seem to find it on the rolex website (they have a green dial and green bezel though) - wondering if that is a discontinued model and if it is any suggestions on how to go about locating one? also, if i don't find one, i might just get the black dial+bezel sub and i've seen photos of watches that with an aftermarket all-black DLC finish - do you have opinions on the life of the coating (i'm guessing enthusiasts and purists may frown on this)? would like to hear from anyone who might have actually gotten this done. i'm not interested in resale value, expect i will keep this watch. third question - having not bought a nice watch before, best places to buy a rolex at a good price? apologies if this is not kosher to ask here (and if so please disregard). many thanks. |

Welcome to TRF and I see you are from the city too. The watch you are looking for is the 16610LV which is the 50th anniversary version of the sub. As of right now it is discontinued but you can definitely still buy one. I can't promise that you can find a new one though.
For pvd or painting it black, it is definitely not recommended by most. It's not just the resale value but over time the coating wears off as well as you being unable to get your rolex serviced if something goes wrong. Being in the NYC area I really doubt you will get much of a good deal unless you know someone who works in an authorized dealer personally. You can buy from here if you would like further details I can also recommend a seller that is not only trustworthy but can give you very nice discounts. |

16610LV (Green Bezel/Black Dial)
16610 (Black Bezel/Black Dial) My vote would be for the 16610 based on the small markers on the dial vs. "Maxi Dial" on the 16610LV and the Green Bezel looks like sewage to me. Both these can be acquired new or "BNIB" brand new in box for under $6000USD. There are new models of both watches that have improvements but it comes at a price. Why don't you go to a Rolex AD or Authorized Dealer. Manhattan is the North American home of Rolex so you'll be in a competitive market. Don't PVC a Rolex. Also, are you buying yourself this gift by chance? |

I saw a guy the other day wearing a "Bamford" PVD coated Submariner. It was well worn, the coating wearing thin in places...Made the watch look like a bad quality fake

I would do some serious research before buying any Rolex off ebay or from a private seller. A rule you may hear is "buy the seller not the watch".
