Entry level Panerai?

I am a really interested in Panerai and have started doing research, but the references are a bit difficult to follow. Whats a good entry level model to look for in 44mm or over? There are lots of references and lots of wildly varying prices..

For example, whats the AirKing/DateJust equivilant in the Pam?

Ha! I'm not sure there is such a thing as entry level, but the historics are a great place to begin.

Yeah, I see some of the serious Panerai collectors (the one with 100K+ watches) wearing the entry level 000 all the time. Why???? B/c they are just a sweet watch! I agree exactly with Mike. No entry level, just buy what sings to you.

once you are into pam's world, then you know all pams are unique... good luck...

Had the chance to buy from a wide range of PAMs at a wide range of prices.

Settled on the PAM005

Reason was,
don't need date or GMT (Have a GMT iic for that)
Don't need see through back as I wear the watch and it's not for display.
Love the logo
Love the distinct winder protection
and
I Saved $'000's over the cost of other models and still own a watch that is distinctly a PAM and certainly does not look like an entry model

So go with what you like and can afford

Exactly, the see through back and the engravings they put on the back of a watch sure seem like nothing more than Richemont gimmicks.

Considering the watch is still WR to 300m with a see through case back is quite good. Plus its nice to look at the movement. Isnt a bad thing in my opinion.

The manual Historic series are a great introduction to Panerai 000, 005, 111, 112.
If you want an automatic movement, check out the 104 and 164.
These are all very popular and easy to find both new and preowned.
Enjoy your search and let us know what you decide.

Never meant that the see through back is bad, it just that I couldn't justify spending another $1,000 for a feature that would be wasted on me.

I do like looking at the movement but thats not possible while I wear the watch

I have the PAM 005 for many of the same reasons the previous poster cited.

It looks sharp, but it is significantly less expensive than most other PAMs with the same look.

I prefer display backs, but no one else is interested in them and I have watches with that feature.

Good luck in your quest! Make sure you try on the watches! They are big!

I love my 111. Was my first expensive watch. Still wear it with the same pleasure as on day one and would probably be the last to sell if I had to.

Maybe if this is going to be your first PAM and you are not looking for the ‘most affordable’ ones you can consider: Panerai Luminor PAM 000, 005, 111,112; or Radiomir PAM 183, 210, 380.

Though I don’t think that there is one definite answer to such thing as a ‘best base’ model. It really boils down to preference and at the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with any base or historical model.

This article of 'Best entry level Panerai' at The Watchology may help you, and hopefully more new members with similar questions..
